Is it bad that I hope Romney wins?

Post by _Buffalo »

It's so selfish. I don't want him to win because he'd be a good president. I want him to win because the added attention paid to the LDS church will force it to behave more ethically and hopefully tone down some of it's more problematic teachings and practices. In other words, it will have to liberalize a little.

Romney will almost certainly win the GOP nomination. I doubt he'll beat Obama, but it's possible.

In terms of what kind of president he'd be, probably quite similar to Obama - completely beholden to his corporate masters, and hopefully less trigger-happy than Bush.

I want him to win and would love to see him successful. I expect him to loose but should he win I think 5 years from now the LDS would be talking about how you can't blame the president for everything.

I would imagine the LDS church would have difficulty holding up under the extra scrutiny if a Mormon became president. If he runs against Obama, we can expect the whole can of worms to be opened for the nation and the world to see.

The LDS Church knows that there is a strong negative undercurrent against the Church, hence the PR campaign. by the way, If I recall correctly, of the 40% not willing to vote for a Mormon, the majority of those were not evangelicals, but Democrats.

I predict an acceleration of people both choosing and rejecting the Church with a Romney Presidency. No net effect in percentages. Just a continuation of the great separation.

There is just something extraordinarily humiliating to a nation when the world finds out that your leader likes to dress up like a baker and exchange secret handshakes with old men behind curtains, just because he thinks it will get him into heaven.

I agree with your reasons, Buffalo. If it's Romney vs. Obama, I won't lose much sleep on election night because I think they would both be relatively good (or average) and effective (or ineffective) presidents. Most of all I love how this process is making the reactionaries and Teavangelicals get pissy because they have to compromise their "principles" to move forward in the political process. Hey morons, that's what it's all about! Welcome home to reality.

I don't really know what this will do for the Mormon Church.

Who knows what Mitt really thinks.

Nancy Regan consulted an astrologer.

It could be worse. Scientology?

Romney first needs to make it past the Republican religious ravers before even considering the Democratic vote. My guess is that Democrats are not so much put off by LDS beliefs as they are wary of Mormon politics.

I expect that blacks being denied the priesthood pre 1978 will become a big deal if he goes against Obama. Romney was 30 years old at the time.

I hope Romney wins the nomination. I think that if he wins the nomination, he has a good chance of beating Obama.

I voted for Obama in '08 because I was frustrated with some of Bush's foreign policy decisions, and I didn't really think that the economy could be any worse. Boy, was I wrong!

We need someone in office who actually has executive experience and knows how to create jobs. The bottom line is, Romney fits that bill. The fact that he is LDS is neither here no there to me.

I was actually a strong Bachman supporter. I am sorry to see her leave the race.
