I am a star

Post by _LDSToronto »

My eldest son still attends church and today my daughter decided to tag along because her best friend, and active LDS kid, slept over.

Well, I guess today was Missionary Day at The Polka Dot Door because a new convert, a ward missionary, and the ward mission leader all spoke. Well, I and my wife proved to be bright examples of apostasy, because the ward mission leader pointed out that many in the church have lost their way, and named dear wife and I as prime examples. That's right, called us by name. Said he really missed me in quorum meetings, missed my wife teaching Sunday School, but unfortunately we have lost our way. Though, he said, he still loves us.

After sacrament, a few people approached my kids and said they really missed us. One guy, who I've never spoken more than 10 words to in 15 years, said he really missed me and I need to call him.

Of course, these people who really love me, well, they must have forgotten where I live, or what my phone number is. Their love must have overwhelmed them so much that the very thought of seeing me would cause their hearts to burst, unless of course such meetings occurred within the confines of the ward meetinghouse, on Sundays, between 9:30am and 12:30pm.

I am so blessed to be so loved!

In front of your kids?

Wow.

I may not have been clear - not only in front of my kids, but from the pulpit during sacrament meeting.

At a baptist church, you will only get called out if you bring a salad and not the required additional desert.

I've been called out at a Baptist Church and I'm not even an apostate Baptist. The pastor gave a mini-sermon on the role of the heart and the intellect, and how special gifts cause pride, with me being used as an example right in front of me. (Turns out the reason my 17 year old self didn't buy their terrible arguments is that I'm a prideful intellectual who doesn't know how to open up his heart.) The pastor even led an entire congregation in prayer for me in front of me. So, uh, yeah.

Or if you forget to plug in the coffee pot.

I'm so sorry, LDST. I would be so upset if I learned that someone had delivered a Sacrament meeting talk wherein they had called me out for my disbelief in Mormonism. And if they did it with my daughter in the room . . . well, what can I say. I'd probably be writing a letter to every local LDS leader in the area expressing my outrage that someone would disrespect my daughter's mother in front of her and the entire congregation. I'd be calling for that person to be reprimanded and not given any more speaking assignments any time in the near future.

I realize that ex-member or inactive-disbelieving-member is not exactly the same to Mormons as never-member, but still. I say let that ward mission leader know in no uncertain terms that he was way out of line, and if he doesn't apologize, then raise whatever hell you can. And let them know that if they really love you, disrespecting you in front of your children is the wrong way to go about it.
