How do I resign from the church?

Post by _Shulem »

For God's sake!! I got on line to check my membership records and they moved my records to another city, assigning me to my x-wife's old address. My x-wife quit going to church and has since moved and remarried, but lo and behold, there I am at her old address.

Although I confessed via email to my last bishop that I am an unrepentent homosexual, he chose to take no action and wished me well.

So, what is the best and painless way to formally exit the church so to officially reduce their membership numbers by 1?

Links or suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

The sample resignation letters are interesting to read. Here is a paragraph from one of them.

I consider my baptism, admission to the priesthood and all other LDS Church proceedings involving me to have been conducted without my lawful consent, as I had not reached the legal age of majority at the time such proceedings occurred. Such proceedings were void ab initio. Please disregard all such proceedings and either (a) destroy all original records and copies thereof evidencing such proceedings, or (b) send the original records to me at the address below and destroy all copies thereof. Any and all other LDS Church records relating to me in any way, wherever maintained, should be handled in like manner. Do not merely relocate my records or code them as “inactive” or in a similar manner. I realize that my demands with respect to my records may fall outside of the LDS Church’s ordinary procedures, however, I am hopeful that due to the LDS Church’s desire to avoid negative publicity and costly litigation, you will fulfill these requests promptly and in accordance with these instructions. I am therefore copying the LDS Church’s Office of General Counsel and Public Affairs Department to ensure that these matters are given the proper attention.

Forget the sterile sample letter. I think Paul should go into extreme graphic detail about why he likes to have sex with men. Who knows, the bishop might be into that kind of letter.

Well, I think this may be the very reason he moved your records the heck out of dodge! He may have also changed his own email address.

You may have just stumbled onto something Paul. All the time we hear about members trying to get the church, home teachers, visiting teachers, missionaries, etc just to leave them alone, but it never works. The "do not contact" list does not work either. I'll bet telling them you're a practicing homosexual puts so much awkward tension in the air you won't even be finding a plate of cookies on your front porch.

P.S. the whole resignation process is probably quicker if you let em' know which side of the fence you lean towards.

Actually, the instructions to resign are quite clear not to send the letter to the Bishop or Stake President but to send it to Member Records Division in Salt Lake. The locals need not be told a thing, so it seems.

That's right, folks. Got a friend who wants to resign? Send them to the nevermo Jersey Girl and she'll hook you up with a good resource, sample letter, instructions.

What on EARTH am I doing on these boards?
