Is this real? Schools can drop Sex Ed

Post by _just me »

I haven't read the whole article, yet.

Legislature Passes a Bill to Allow Schools to Drop Sex Ed

The Legislature gave final passage Tuesday to a bill that would let schools skip teaching sex education and prohibit instruction in the use of contraception.

This bill that was passed was specific to schools in the state of Utah. Apparently, sex education courses which talk about controceptives and various birth control options will not be allowed. However, it appears that there will still be a basic maturation class talking about puberty and changing bodies will still be taught in 5th and 6th grades.

That's really thoughtful.

So at least when all those teenage girls get pregnant at least they will understand what is going on, and won't just think they are putting on a lot of weight.

And all this should certainly help the US maintain its present healthy birth-rate.

The ut legislature is an abomination of backwards thinking and inbreeding.

Agreed.

The democratic senators brought out some valid points. Here is a particularly disturbing quote from the article:

Sen. Pat Jones, D-Holladay, called the bill "a mandate against reality," as parents already have the option of keeping their kids out of sex ed. Relatively few parents make that choice.

Now, parents must opt their children into sex education classes if they want them to participate, and districts may already choose to teach abstinence only. Under the bill, however, districts may choose not to teach the topic at all, or, if they do teach it, they must teach abstinence only.

"It’s concerning when now we’re trying to dictate morality," Robles said.

Sen. Ross Romero, D-Salt Lake City, said lawmakers must understand that not all kids will learn about the topic if it isn’t taught at school.

"We’ve been discussing this as if every child has the benefit of two loving and caring parents who are ready to have a conversation about appropriate sexual activity, and I’m here to tell you that’s just not the case," Romero said.

(Bold emphasis mine) This, to me, is disturbing. Obviously, abstinence is the only foolproof way for teens to be free of STD's and unwanted pregnancies. However, for an educator to turn a blind eye to reality, and refuse to least acknowledge that there are other methods of birth control and disease prevention is absurd.

Either ALL methods of birth control should be, at least acknowledged, or none should be mentioned, and the course should be kept as a very basic biology class.

I'm sad to think of my closed minded ideas when in high school. The prejudice I held against this type of education...

Why is it so bad to leave this decision in the hands of local school boards? Where, one would assume, it is directly accountable to its constituents?

Because it makes a mockery of equal education.

Because those backward Utah Mormons won't get it right, of course.

Much like those backwards Arkansansans and Nebraskans.
