How "bad" is it to be sexually attracted to Jesus?

Post by _quark »

A contributor to a site called Datingish asked if it is possible to love Jesus too much. Other people have asked if it is normal to be sexually attracted to Jesus. It got me to wondering the same thing. Say you find your mental image of Jesus extremely alluring. What if you got aroused during silent, personal prayer? Is that evil?

What about a woman who knew Jesus (when he walked the earth) personally and fell in love with him (a possible scenario)? If it is okay for this person to be sexually attracted to Jesus, then why not a person who has a spiritual relationship with him?

Is it a sin to be sexually attracted to Jesus and if so, how bad a sin is it? On the one hand, it is good because it means you *really* get to know the Lord. You also become sensitive to his feelings. It might give you motivation to come closer to his teachings and apply his ideas to your daily life. It could all be for the greater good.

The band Type O Negative explored this a bit in their (freakin amazing) song "Christian Woman." Definitely worth checking out (...if you're not easily offended): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YsfJPkt9rI

Your question reminded me of a scene in one of Paul Verhoeven's pre-Hollywood Dutch films, The Fourth Man. (Apologies for the quality of that clip).

Wherein the soul sings of the happy chance which it had in passing through the dark night of faith, in detachment and purgation of itself, to union with the Beloved.

1. On a dark night, Kindled in love with yearnings — oh, happy chance! —
I went forth without being observed, My house being now at rest.

2. In darkness and secure, By the secret ladder, disguised — oh, happy chance! —
In darkness and in concealment, My house being now at rest.

3. In the happy night, In secret, when none saw me,
Nor I beheld aught, Without light or guide, save that which burned in my heart.

4. This light guided me More surely than the light of noonday,
To the place where he (well I knew who!) was awaiting me — A place where none appeared.

5. Oh, night that guided me, Oh, night more lovely than the dawn,
Oh, night that joined Beloved with lover, Lover transformed in the Beloved!

6. Upon my flowery breast, Kept wholly for himself alone,
There he stayed sleeping, and I caressed him, And the fanning of the cedars made a breeze.

7. The breeze blew from the turret As I parted his locks;
With his gentle hand he wounded my neck And caused all my senses to be suspended.

8. I remained, lost in oblivion; My face I reclined on the Beloved.
All ceased and I abandoned myself, Leaving my cares forgotten among the lilies.

--"Ascent of Mount Carmel", by St. John of the Cross

Which echoes the "Song of Songs".

Since there is Jesus erotica out there, including gay Jesus erotica, I'm guessing it is not a sin. Why? No lightning strikes.

Such only goes to demonstrate how pathetic people can choose to become. Death comes eventually to everyone and after that the judgment.

i think the LDS church has made it more clear in recent years that attraction alone is not a sin.
