How did your political views change when you left Mormonism

Post by _Rambo »

I grew up in a very conservative house hold. When I left the church I noticed my political views changed. They changed from socially conservative to socially liberal. They are now more my own views rather than what a instituation tells me what my views should be. Some of the things socially that changed for me are.

Same sex attraction is natural and people who are attracted to their own gender should have equal rights.

Abortion is not as black and white as I thought it was.

The war on drugs is a waste of money and time.

Jesus is not going to cleanse the earth by fire so we should probably take care of it. I'm still not convinced about man made global warming but I am convinced we should take care of the enviroment. As a Mormon I use to think there was no point because this whole earth was going to recieve Celestial glory anways.

Being poor is not necessarily a choice.
We should spend more money on heath care than we do on national defense.
Democrats are not evil.
Being rich is not necessarily something one earns and deserves.
Republicans are not all good people.
Illegal aliens are people too.

My views on fiscal issues didn't change much. Nor did my views on abortion (personally find it abhorrent but it's not the government's business).

About the only thing that has changed for me is that I realized that the only reason I was opposed to same-sex marriage was that the church was opposed to it. The arguments against it are all lame and reactionary.

My views didn't change when I joined and only changed later because I can't stand the ultra right wing Tea Partiers. I used to firmly believe in the best candidate for the job and now I believe that Republicans are just nucking futs.

Romney running on a platform of total criticism of Obama yet keeping completely quiet on what exactly he would do isn't much to convince me of anything. It isn't a crime to be rich - but being rich has made him totally out of touch with someone like me - who has been deeply financially hurt by the Republican caused recession.

Regardless of whatever the Cult may have taught (1986-2001) I still believed in equal rights for women and never much listened to them politically.

The recession was a bipartisan effort.

How did the recession start. It was because of the housing crisis right? Which resulted in a financial crisis.

It seems like a democrate thing to want everyone to own a house but it seems like a republican thing to limit regulations. To be honest I am pretty confused about he whole thing.

That's partly it. The other part is that both parties catered to their benefactors on Wall Street and crafted legislation that made it easier for things to go south. Since then it's not been much better. Dodd-Frank adds a lot of bureaucratic hoops to jump through but doesn't address the real structural problems in the banking and finance industry.

My political views changed just prior to my exodus from belief in the doctrines of the church. Maybe my change in political views is partly to blame for my loss in faith. :)

I'm still conservative on a lot of issues, but I'm also liberal on other issues, and I claim the right to change my mind whenever I want to. It's refreshing to be able to have my own opinion regarding political and social issues. I hate discussing stuff with TBMs because too often they begin their argument with "According the church" or "I will wait until the church takes a position before deciding." How sad is that?

I doubt it Zee :) It was probably because you wanted to sin!

Nothing to do with the discovery of Joseph Smith dirty little secrets or Book of Abraham issues...
