i didn't listen to the talk, so i assume he meant we should avoid the trap of thinking it's sufficient to merely tolerate our fellow humans, when Jesus taught that we need to go further and love them unconditionally.

is that about what he said?

You're still bouncing around out in the Ort Cloud, pale. You've a long, long way to go yet to make it to the inner planets, let alone back to earth.

Little else need be said here, except that this is one of the places where the gospel rubber meets the Babylonian road and where we "choose ye this day" that which we are willing to recieve, the degree to which we will follow the Lord's living oracles, and the level of comittment and conversion we are willing to develop and nurture regarding the restored gospel.

"Good evening.

"My name is Michael Otterson, and I am here tonight officially representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The non-discrimination ordinance being reviewed by the City Council concerns important questions for the thoughtful people of this community.

"Like most of America, our community in Salt Lake City is comprised of citizens of different faiths and values, different races and cultures, different political views and divergent demographics. Across America and around the world, diverse communities such as ours are wrestling with complex social and moral questions. People often feel strongly about such issues. Sometimes they feel so strongly that the ways in which they relate to one another seem to strain the fabric of our society, especially where the interests of one group seem to collide with the interests of another. ...

"The issue before you tonight is the right of people to have a roof over their heads and the right to work without being discriminated against.

Where do we find this apostate Mr. Otterson?

First tell me what on earth this has to do with the substance of what Packer meant by "the tolerance trap"?

Go read a few posts over on MAD. There are still plenty of TBMs with there head stuck in 1956.

It took a public protest by Mormon women to get this change.

This kind of pubescent fantasizing is always good for a few laughs now and then, but it grows stale very quickly. Once having lost the Spirit and abandoned the iron rod, darkness settles upon the mind like a great, creeping, suffocating spiritual and intellectual oil slick. The longer apostasy continues, the thicker and gooier the mantal becomes. The mind and heart become darkened, confused, chaotic, and occluded, and one is left flailing in impotent rage ("kicking against the pricks") against every whiff of truth.

The apostate (very much like the average leftist in the broader secular world) is left in the postion of living with his middle finger lifted angrily, bitterly, and perennially against the light, wherever it may break through the dark, rumbling clouds to illuminate God's footstool.

When people such as this come together in a single place, you have the MDB.

Surprise, surprise, there is no divine mandate for the Church to discuss and portray its history accurately.

Back in the 50s I'm sure there was a BC Space who thought Mark E Peterson's racist talks were pretty awesome. Today those talks are an embarassment that most members distance themselves from and drfensively argue "that was just jis opinion." The same thing will happen when future generations read about Packer's "we're not tolerant" talk.

It's funny to watch them want to take his comments as authoritative because it fits with their worldview, and ignore other comments by church leaders that don't. The left will do the same, and they realize BKP is a fossil of old ideas best left to die.

I'm sure this happens frequently.

Sure of it.

Uh........he is a General Authority of our Church, after all, and we do, understanding the role and necessity of his mantal of authority, accept his words, in concert with those of the FP and Twelve, as authoritative, yes.

And then there's your worldview, which is based upon...what, precisely, Themis?

Happily, your years of participating in apologetic message boards has left you in the position of routinely denying things GA's have said at the pulpit or in the name of the Lord as authoritative. But when it is something you agree with, then all of a sudden, it's definitive. You don't even try to be consistent.

Funny thing is a body blow from the church against any national or worldwide political movement is more akin to the bite of a mosquito.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.
