If Obamacare is so good...

Post by _bcspace »

...why would any Democrat, and their sycophants and supporters, who voted for it seek an exemption from the law? Why is this law good for us but not good enough for them?

Republicans of course can be excused as they know how bad the law is. I've seen first hand how bad the law is and how it's already have a huge negative impact on individual's lives via a reduction in employment, higher costs, and less availability.

The reason why the law is "good for us" but not "good for Congress" is that the law limits their choices but doesn't limit ours. In general, people are free to purchase insurance through the exchanges or through any other venue that they want to. The exception is Congress: according to the law, the government may only offer insurance to Congress and to Congressional staff through the exchanges.

The specific section of the law under question says:
(C) INDIVIDUALS ALLOWED TO ENROLL IN ANY PLAN.—
A qualified individual may enroll in any qualified health
plan, except that in the case of a catastrophic plan described
in section 1302(e), a qualified individual may enroll
in the plan only if the individual is eligible to enroll in the
plan under section 1302(e)(2).
(D) MEMBERS OF CONGRESS IN THE EXCHANGE.—
(i) REQUIREMENT.—Notwithstanding any other
provision of law, after the effective date of this subtitle,
the only health plans that the Federal Government
may make available to Members of Congress and
congressional staff with respect to their service as a
Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be
health plans that are—
(I) created under this Act (or an amendment
made by this Act); or
(II) offered through an Exchange established
under this Act (or an amendment made by this
Act)

As a trivia point, it was Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who came up with this point of the law.
