Stryker initially announced the layoffs in November 2011, saying at the time that the reductions should free up capital for strategic investments and growth "despite the ongoing challenging economic environment and market slowdown in elective procedures."
Uh-huh. So there has been a completely predictable decrease in people getting knee replacements in a down economy, and you're shocked that it caused a problem for the company that makes the devices.
By the way, that's 1,000 employees out of 20,000, or a 5% reduction. Not exactly a drastic cut.
Everyone has been cutting back. IBM, for example, has laid off about 50,000 employees over the last three years, and plans to cut another 30,000 in the next three. I suppose you would tie that to the health care law as well.
