The world 'vagina' comes from the latin for 'sheath', as in 'knife sheath', so a gun holster isn't too much of a (ahem) stretch.

I thought his spare, bleak prose was a reflection of his years in the bottle. The hellish shadow of (what must have been) McCarthy's marriage provides a little more insight.
I didn't think McCarthy could ever really convincingly craft female characters. Sadly, this lack of awareness was apparently reflected in his relationship choices.
