I had a grandfathered AT&T DSL connection, and they were contantly trying to raise my rates. I'm not a big fan of AT&T to begin with, so I decided to cancel and go with Sonic.net.
I was without internet while I was waiting for Sonic.net to install, so for giggles I tethered my Nexus 4 cell phone to my chrome laptop to see how it would do. Here are the results from Speedtest.net:

That is a screaming download number (the lowest I tested was 16.75 Mbps), especially for a cell phone. I cancelled Sonic.net, and upped my T-Mobile plan to unlimited 4G data for $70 a month. So for an addition $20 a month over my original cell plan I have faster speeds than I ever had with AT&T, and a mobile hotspot/tethering device I can use anywhere.
I am one happy camper. If you have a cell phone, it may be worth your while to tether to your computer and see what your download speeds are compared to your current ISP. As I said at the top, it's probably very dependent upon your proximity to a cell tower, but certainly worth investigating.
