Silly me, I thought all this time a 'mobile device' was something like a car, truck, sherman tank, or skate board. I had no idea...

I think one would be hard pressed to find an institution or social organization today in the US that wouldn't suffer from that policy. Hell, if a movie theater (thinking of a place most people seem to wish other people didn't have their cells with them and out) had people lock their phones in safes and gave them back after movies I'd bet theaters would see a marked decrease in attendance. On top of the bad press.
Along those lines, I heard this was up as a candidate for 2014's word of the year: Nomophobia
Anyone with a sick relative or a small child at home with a baby sitter is not going anywhere that refuses to admit cell phones. At a movie theater you can silence your ringer, but still get the vibration.
true...but every addict needs an excuse that sounds good, otherwise why bother having one at all?

If I was asked for my phone on the way into Mass I would leave, not only because I would reuse to hand over my personal property but also it would take forever to get it back after church. It would be a mad house after nine o'clock mass trying to get my phone back as the ten o'clock people were arriving and having to turn over their phone. The parking lot is bad enough that we are reminded at the end of each Mass to "be kind to each other in the parking lot" I can't even imagine what a phone check would be like.
I still find it rather shocking that LDS members used devices during church, I keep seeing my moms reaction to something like this as I recall having to be quiet and attentive through many events as a child.

I have only been to one church service in over 25 years, and I don't remember seeing any electronic devises.
So is it really that common? Is there Wi Fi? ... Netflix?

It's something I've read of on just about every Mormon related board I've seen, but when people on MD&D admit to using electronic devices in church lit eads me to believe that is at least not uncommon if not down right common.

Yes the name of the WiFi in LDS buildings is OneTrueWiFi and it restricts you to lds.org and Mormon.org only.

Are you talking about the addiction to cell phones or the addiction to church?

Hey, is addiction to Church even a thing? I have never known anyone who couldn't stop going... (Maybe I need to widen my circle of friends).Quasimodo wrote:Are you talking about the addiction to cell phones or the addiction to church?

I try to stay off my cell phone in Sacrament meeting (I usually read an actual book), but I'm usually on it for SS and EQ. I'll have the lesson material open, but also a blog or two, or a kindle book I'm reading.
I would estimate that at least half the other class members have their devices out, but I don't know how many are viewing lesson material vs. web surfing.

I think it often is. There are many (some on this board) who, despite all the reasonable and reliable evidence to the contrary, continue to attend and defend the Church. I think that's an addiction.
Very often, people involved in cults (there's that word), need an intervention to free themselves. Just like alcohol and drugs.
