Those threads were fascinating to read, by the way. I was out during that time period but not online much (new marriage. babies, grad school, teaching etc.) so I had no idea those conversations were happening! I just hunkered down, told my family i was Catholic to hopefully forestall any fights, and went it alone.

Yup, some of us have been doing this same thing for far longer than that. Definition of insanity, people.

In following this thread, I came to realize that, save for the good ol' 7.62 mm M60 machine gun, there is not one piece of weaponry or equipment mentioned by others here that was used when I was on active duty.

We had M14 rifles (7.62 mm that were still pretty effective at 500 yards), M1911 .45 cal side arms, M48-A3 tanks, the infamous M-50 Ontos, and M55 Mobile 8 inch Howitzers, and - wait for it - K-rats.

To top it off, I decided to check out my DD-214 and saw it was still an old DD-256. My USMC serial number isn't even my Social Security Number.

Think I'll just head out to the back porch, sit down in my rocking chair and stare out at the lake.

That's easy to fix...

Hey. It's a Browning M2 .50 cal - mounted on a tripod, just as God intended, and still in use.

Thanks, CG.

I feel so much better now.

Another tent city thread from LDSFF speculating about the reason why Kirkham's (a local SLC manufacturer of outdoor products) is out of canvas tents:

http://www.ldsfreedomforum.com/viewtopi ... =2&t=39647

Further proof (read the OP) that the tent city-believers hope that they and they alone, through their preparation and worthiness, are privileged to receive the "call out":

http://www.ldsfreedomforum.com/viewtopi ... =2&t=39759

Just the read the OP on this doozy for an understanding of the fringe mentality of the elitist tent city call-out crowd:

Could Julie Rowe be facing the wrath of the SCMC right now? It's certainly possible. At LDSFF last night, a thread was started about Julie Rowe facing ecclesiastical discipline. I read it, and her defenders dismiss the claim as an attempt to slur her good name and image. LDSFF quickly moved the thread to a private, invitation-only forum in the board. Even signing up isn't enough to let you see it (believe me, I've tried). This way, I suppose, the tin foil helmet-wearing mods can better suppress information they don't like.

Paranoia, message control, tail wagging the dog...  Just another day at the LDSFF.

Hi Everybody Wang Chung,

Quick question. How is it even possible that these folks are waiting for "Let's go (tent?) shopping" Monson to their cause? why would they think he would callo them?

back when I believed the last days were upon us, I had materials funneled to me (before the internet) such as family firesides. President Benson was the prophet back then, and there were rumors of Benson telling people in confidence that "the time is close". Certainly, his prophetic endorsement of Skousen was a boon to the business. But now? How do these people think the prophet even believes in the second coming let alone that it is close and that we need to prepare?

The catastrophes of the last days will surely ruin real estate values, so why don't these people take the prophet's buying habits into account?

That's a great question, Dean. I truly have a difficult time understanding the preppers' mindset. I think they truly believe they are the elect and have greater light and understanding than the rest of the Church. Kind of like the Mopologists.

Every generation of Christians, stretching back to the primitive church and the original disciples, has believed that the winding-up and the Second Coming would likely occur within their lifespans, or shortly beyond. And it's a bit narcissistic of us to insist that everything is now coming to an ultimate culmination during our lives. But it's the way "preppers" throughout the Christian eschatological movements have operated.
It is better to travel well than to arrive.
