But the little boy passed in his short shorts? The rationale, as I understand it, is to have even children be garment ready, but if so there is a gender bias clearly on display here.

Runtu, do you recall if anyone mentioned the boy's shorts as they were making the PhotoShop changes to the girl's pants?

I had forgotten that, but yes, my manager and I both brought it up. We were told it was a "cultural thing" with Asians that applied to the girl but not the boy.

One of my favorite COB stories: they were updating the Aaronic Priesthood and Young Women manuals. I was working on the former, and a female colleague, who had worked there for many years, was working on the latter. We realized that a lot of the lessons overlapped, so we worked together to avoid duplicating effort and to ensure that the content matched. When the manuals came back from typesetting, the AP manual used Helvetica, and the YW manual used Palatino. Having everything in Helvetica made the manual look kind of dated and difficult to read, so I asked why we couldn't use a serif font for both. The graphic designer said, "Helvetica is a more masculine font." Without missing a beat, my female colleague asked, "Is that because it's more erect?" The designer turned beet red. After that, we referred to that as "the day that all Helvetica broke loose."

The other thing we noticed was that the curriculum folks were more receptive to my suggestions than they were to hers. I asked her why she thought that was. "It's simple," she said. "You have a penis."

It was later made garment compliant when placed on a resource page for LDS primary teachers:

Little kids don't wear garments. Someone in SLC has a squirril loose in their drawers or something.
