Not sure if you're a boy or a girl ...

Post by _Runtu »

Fascinating story on the BBC web site that brings up some interesting questions for me.

If a child has been raised as a girl and then suddenly becomes a boy at 12 or 13, should he be ordained to the priesthood? How does the possibility that gender may change affect how that child is taught his role in the plan of salvation?

To summarize, there is a remote community in the Dominican Republic where children are born appearing to be biologically female, without penis and testicles. When they go through puberty, usually at age 12 or 13, they develop male genitalia. Many of these children have been raised as females, only to find as adolescents that they are males. I think this raises some interesting questions about gender roles in general and priesthood in particular.

"Why would God do that to anyone?"

Exactly.

A response on MAD says

Elder Oaks has suggested during the last year that leaders may be revisiting the issue. He's admitted that, frankly, leaders don't understand this issue very well.

It is almost like church leadership is having to figure out stuff all by themselves.
Wouldn't it be nice if the church had someone who could just ask God to clarify what He wants?

It just seems to me that it's not an easy transition from being told all your life that you are a girl and should be preparing for your roles as wife and mother, even though you may not want that at all. Then, all of a sudden, when you develop genitals, the church, family, and culture all tell you, never mind.

What kind of god do that?
- Whenever a poet or preacher, chief or wizard spouts gibberish, the human race spends centuries deciphering the message. - Umberto Eco
- To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. - Cardinal Bellarmine at the trial of Galilei

You're not suggestion, are you, that it would be nice if the church had...continuing revelation rather than mere board meeting discussions?

I'm betting that they come out on testes=priesthood, whenever they drop.
