While this country is involved in a war with a society that wants to create a religious state, we're in the process of building one here. Mississippi just enshrined a law not only upholding sincerely held religious beliefs, but giving special status to the beliefs specified below:
“SECTION 2. The sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions protected by this act are the belief or conviction that:
“(a) Marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman;
“(b) Sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage; and
“(c) Male (man) or female (woman) refer to an individual’s immutable biological sex as objectively determined by anatomy and genetics at time of birth.”
So Mississippi gets to decide what sincerely held religious beliefs are protected by the act. In other words, the legislature of Mississippi is writing laws to conform to the religious beliefs of a specific set of Mississippians.
So if you have a sincere moral conviction that sex outside of marriage is wrong, Mississippi gives you the right to decide that same behavior for others. Foster parents can force gay foster kids to go through conversion therapy.
As far as section (c) goes, I wonder if Bruce Jenner (as he now must be known in Mississippi) will be campaigning for many Republican candidates in Ol' Miss. I hope most people plan a bypass operation on the Heart of Dixie.
