3 women expelled for hate crime hoax

Albany University Expels Women Charged with Fabricating ‘Hate Crime’

Three women accused of falsely claiming they were victims of racial abuse and physical assault have been expelled from Albany University and will now face criminal charges.

Two of the women, Ariel Agudio and Asha Burwell, face charges of misdemeanor assault and falsely reporting an incident. A third, Alexis Briggs, is being charged on one count of misdemeanor assault.

The university’s president, Robert J. Jones, confirmed that Agudio and Burwell had been expelled, whilst Briggs has been suspended for two years, according to Fox News.

The young women had claimed white men physically assaulted them and hurled racial slurs whilst riding the university bus in January. However, on close inspection, investigators concluded that the alleged victims were in fact the aggressors, and the accused were in fact trying to break up the fight.

None of the women were present at a university disciplinary hearing, claiming a “conflict of interest” as the university could be asked to testify in criminal proceedings.

At the hearing, university faculty testified against the women, asserting they had instigated the fight and harmed the school’s reputation. As reported by the Albany Times-Union:

One witness was Inspector Paul Burlingame of the University Police Department, who cited video, audio, witness interviews, and more than 300 hours of investigation as he testified to the board that the three women started the fight.

“There is absolutely no evidence which supports Ms. Burwell’s version of events that the incident was precipitated by a female passenger hitting Ms. Burwell while Ms. Burwell was seated,” Burlingame said, “and in fact, there is no video evidence showing Ms. Burwell being struck by anyone at all.”

Because the incident was first reported as a hate crime, Burlingame testified that victims of the assault did not come forward at first as they feared for their safety.

Only when they learned there was video of the incident did they reach out, Burlingame said.

In March, the Times Union reported that a student widely reported to have left school after being threatened was never registered at the university this semester.

The only other witness at the hearing was by Joseph Brennan, a UAlbany vice president of communications and marketing, who testified that the school suffered “reputational harm” as a result of the conduct of the three women.

All three women are pleading not guilty to the charges and have meanwhile refused a plea deal requiring them to make a public apology, according to a local ABC affiliate. One of their supporters told a reporter for ABC News 10 that the video casting doubt on their original story is “doctored.”

If I were to post blog entries detailing "news" about children falsely claiming to have been molested, how do you think that would come across?

How do you think it comes across when Hillary Clinton uses this case as part of her campaign back in February when everyone just assumed they were telling the truth?

Obviously everyone didn't assume anything. Having said that this video proves nothing about what the women claimed happened to them. The guy was clearly filming the whole thing on his cell phone so I wonder why he hasn't released it.

Uh huh. And if I were to do so incessantly, week after week, month after month, for years? This is the kinds of crap that makes "news" in Right Wing media because it serves a purpose of blaming victims or in this case, casting doubt on the entire concept of hate crimes against minorities. Ajax obviously hates that these laws exist, for the same reason super-predators hate it when children are able to out them for their true intentions.

Here's an instance where that happened.

Here's another.

Both cases were fascinating. I especially recommend the Frontline Documentary about autism facilitators.

I also would recommend Capturing the Friedmans.

All of these incidents are critical of children reporting sexual abuse. I think sexual abuse rings a strong limbic bell in the human psyche, It is the ultimate violation of one of things we consider most precious: the trust of children. Children are so malleable, they can be bent by evil and twisted people.

But it is that very malleability that makes children vulnerable to becoming ink blots of their parent's fears, or their facilitator's fears, or the police detective's prosecutorial wishes.

Pointing that out doesn't make me any less against child abuse. But sometimes children can become victims of our own fears.

As far as relating all of that to the case at hand: I believe racism exists, but I also believe that the fear and the expectation of racism also exist. And yes, some people want victimhood. And in that way the expectation of racism can have consequences as well as actual racism.

Recently I was on the bus when a lady got on. She did not appear to be disabled. They were 2 young men sitting on a 3 seat bench underneath a sign that said the seats had to be given up for senior and disabled persons. The woman started screaming at them, saying her disability demanded 2 seats. The young men quickly got up. When I politely pointed out to the woman that there had been a third seat on the bench and the young men had no way of knowing that her disability required 2 seats, she said I wouldn't have defended them if we weren't white.

Now I cannot claim (can anyone in the U.S. ?) to being completely color-blind, but I honestly don't think at that point I had really thought about the woman's race. (From her accent and appearance, I would guess that she was of mixed raced descent, and her accent had a Caribbean lilt). But her interpretation of the situation was that I was the old white man sticking up for the young white men against the poor (I'm guessing Afro/Caribbean) woman of color. And I quite frankly didn't know how to fight through that wall. I didn't know what to say.

We live in a time of very emotional politics. This is not the fist time someone has screamed racism in a crowded political theater. So while I believe racism exists, I also believe that there is an element on the left (smaller, but still significant) that will sometimes prejudge a situation and there is racism when there is none, or worse, to use racism to excuse their own unjustified actions. And black or white, left or right, that's wrong

There's also the Rolling Stone fiasco and the Duke Lacrosse team. Let us not forget Tawana Brawley, who put Al Sharpton on the map.
