The Crackpot Explosion

"Once a user joins a single group on Facebook, the social network will suggest dozens of others on that topic, as well as groups focused on tangential topics that people with similar profiles also joined. That is smart business. However, with unchecked content, it means that once people join a single conspiracy-minded group, they are algorithmically routed to a plethora of others. Join an anti-vaccine group, and your suggestions will include anti-GMO, chemtrail watch, flat Earther (yes, really), and "curing cancer naturally" groups. Rather than pulling a user out of the rabbit hole, the recommendation engine pushes them further in. We are long past merely partisan filter bubbles and well into the realm of siloed communities that experience their own reality and operate with their own facts."

Thanks for the link to a fascinating article. This trend is not only on the Internet, the removal of the fairness doctrine has made balanced viewpoints a thing of the past. This is one of the reasons we have gridlock in politics. We now have ideological purists who don't get enough good exposure to opposing ideas deciding issues on an emotional level. One of the things about the decline of print media is that most great newspapers made a point of having some sort of canon of ethics. Yes, many times those ethics have been violated, but now there are virtually no ethics to violate. Our level of civil discourse has become more cruel and personal, and Television eats it up, because emotional conflict sells on Television. Someone recently observed that Palin and Trump were sort of a match made in heaven: on the one hand, a politician sliding over to reality television, and other the other, a reality television star sliding into politics. And the more we blur the lines between politics and entertainment, the easier it is for a demagogue to take over.

Speaking of which, this was the headline on CNN:

Donald Trump disavows longtime butler after he called for Obama to be killed

Just repeat over and over: This is a political campaign, not a reality show.

Here is a long look at Trump's Butler, Mr. Senecal, and his outrageous posts on Facebook:

The CNN report got Mr. Senecal's age wrong. He is 74 rather than 84. Perhaps Fox will make him 94.

This could ultimately help Mr. Trump. Conservatives seem to really love that Trump is making it popular and more socially acceptable to scream both insane and racist things and not have it blow up in their face.

It's hilarious to me that right-wingers claim the country is "post-racial" simply because we elected a black president. If anything, electing Obama has highlighted and even exacerbated racial tension in this country. Otherwise, Trump would have had no chance in the primaries.

I've said it before - with all the lingering racism in this country, I don't think we were ready for an African American president. Too many fucktards (like this douche bag butler) remain. Now we're suffering the backlash.

Yes, lovely how the 1st amendment clause is becoming socially acceptable and popular again....to sip tea and nibble biscuits in your peer circle must be so lovely...and circular.

post-racial is simply a term to characterize the fact that blacks are free to express their hatred of whites openly. To imply that "racism" is as lopsided publicly/privately/institutionally as it was 50+ years ago is absurd and without justification from reality. How can you still have any white tears left in those eyes? Do those tears so distort your vision that you fail to see?

and yes, Obama being elected, Oprah making billions, Jordan, Tiger, countless statesmen, doctors, lawyers, business owners, CEOs, garbage men, hobos, pilots, husbands and wives....all prove "post racial".
Just because there are individual whites that despise blacks or individual blacks that despise whites does not contradict this "post racial" claim. Racism is no longer a cultural fixture in America except among those who would use a source of entitlement (regardless of race).

Please show me where the first amendment protects you from people thinking less of you for having said horrible things.

Thanks.
