Does MDB lead TBMs to a better life?

I know this board and others don't have anything to do with what happened to me. It was my daughter!!! Darn her!! I fought hard telling her that there was no stone in the hat and was she crazy?? Then she tried to tell me that Joseph was convicted of crimes and that he cheated people out of money....was she crazy?? And if that wasn't enough...she said she read that Joseph married women who were already married...damn her!!She belonged to a board called postmormon.org and tried to set me straight...I would have none of that!

And then..I read...studied..and even prayed.

One day, I got on postmo and told a story...pretty soon...there was a voice on line that said..."Mom, is that you?"

That's a funny story, candygal! So you were out or on your way out when you came here. I know you are a recent member to MDB. Do you think it's helpful?

I do...actually having a voice either way is how one finds out more about themselves. You guys know the scriptures and the scripts much better than I..and nothing wrong with still learning new things. I will be honest and say that there are certain things or principles that I hang on to of my previous life..that being said, it is so nice to have more choices. I am out..Resigned in 2008. Because I have friends all over the place..I also participate on the other board. For some very valid reasons for me..I care very much about the LDS women still in the church. That daughter of mine...damn her!

It is a long one..but if I don't give you the long one..no one will ever understand the reason why leaving the church would be the hardest thing I would ever do.

It sounds like it's been a long process for you. Was your leaving as painful as some of the others that I have read about here?

I sincerely doubt it. I feel lucky to have had a gradual slide away from the LDS Church. Perhaps the healthiest moments are those in which I reflect on just how much I didn't like it. Not thinking it was "false," just that I didn't like it. Those thoughts cut the issue down to size.

I found this place after Loyal Liberal Mormons on Yahoo!Groups had started to grow quiet. By the time I arrived here I did not have a conventional testimony but I was probably what you would call a NOM. What happened to me here is that I went from being skeptical of apologetics to seeing FARMS as a huge problem. Over time, I feel like my view was completely vindicated. There is a new generation of apologetics that I doubt I will spend much time criticizing. I can't imagine myself wrangling with the new apologists.

So, I don't think this board, on its own, was *the* factor in moving me from NOM to ex-LDS (note the choice of expressions). It was more the place I called my home for talking about things Mormon as I went on that journey. It was really the LDS Church itself which pushed me out the door. The prohibition against baptizing the children of married or cohabiting gays was the final straw. It is one thing that the Church's narrative is essentially bogus. It is another that Church has become such an unpleasant experience. The sacrifice of children to Moloch was a bridge too far.

Wow...I didn't know this board existed at the time of going through my own process of leaving the church. I became acquainted with the postmormon board way before we even had those billboards.. I understand how you feel..when you have a place that lets you sort out your thoughts and find yourself in a place where life is okay..even without the church. hugs to you and everyone here..Our journeys may have been different but I think our feelings and new found logic is pretty much the same. I hope you are having a happy life now Kishkumen!

I used to participate as a TBM on the old LDSTalk message board. The extent of my apologetics were basically, "Yeah, but what them?" and then I'd point out biblical nonsense or stupid things Christians do.

Eventually I read some RFM recovery stories and my shelf imploded. I stayed there for a while, migrated to ex-mo social until that forum tanked, and then somehow ended up here.

And man oh man, the content generated on this forum, the sheer level of in depth analysis, educational material, and very, very good contributions by the more educated posters here have been amazing. I almost feel guilty at times getting such good content for free. The level of effort some of the people here who have put in so much energy to make informative, insightful, and sourced contributions blows me away.

Anyway, through the natural evolution of the topic at hand and the fact that you can go in circles only so many times, the discourse here has dropped off a bit. It's not a complaint, but merely an observation because, again, you can only say the same things over and over again before it's all been said. Plus, most Mormons realize they need the protection of a heavily moderated forum to stay ignorant. They're just not going to get that here.

A great story. I don't think I would recognize you as a TBM.

This is a good board. There are so many bright, impressive people participating here. I think I learn something new every time I log on.

The conversations do seem to go in waves. You get lulls periodically, but then some new Church proclamation or rule will generate pages full of posts. It seems we have acquired quite a few new members from the demise of NOM and we are now getting some interesting, fresh perspectives.
