Jury finds all Oregon standoff defendants not guilty of federal conspiracy, gun charges

Please someone explain how these asshats are not guilty of these charges?

At least the feds got a little revenge in the end on the idiot who got these guys off...

The coda to the stunning verdict, undoubtedly a significant blow to federal prosecutors, was when Ammon Bundy's lawyer Marcus Mumford argued that his client, dressed in a gray suit and white dress shirt, should be allowed to walk out of the court, a free man.

U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown told him that there was a U.S. Marshal's hold on him from a pending federal indictment in Nevada.

"If there's a detainer, show me,'' Mumford stood, arguing before U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown.

Suddenly, a group of about six U.S. Marshals surrounded Mumford at his defense table and grabbed on to him.

"What are you doing?'' Mumford yelled, as he struggled and was taken down to the floor.

As deputy marshals yelled, "Stop resisting,'' the judge demanded, "Everybody out of the courtroom now!''

Mumford was taken into custody, a member of his legal team confirmed.

Ammon Bundy's lawyer J. Morgan Philpot, said afterwards on the courthouse steps that Mumford had been arrested and a taser had been used on him. That could not be independently confirmed.

Captain Moroni's Mormon Mob managed to get one of their number shot to death by authorities. They can't be too happy or proud about that.

As a former defense attorney, this disturbs me. I'm not saying what Mumford did was the wisest thing to do, but the reaction from the Marshals seems over the top. But then again, law enforcement going overboard seems to be a common theme in the news lately.

How are they not guilty? I don't know since I didn't follow the case. But I know my job was much easier when the other side wasn't well liked, wasn't prepared, and not very good at their jobs.

For example, I once did a jury trial on a Felony DWI. The prosecutor wasn't very good at her job, and didn't have a good reputation in the county. The State Trooper had a problem running his portable breathalyzer. The Trooper was the only witness at the trial. It was clear that my client refused to take the full breathalyzer test at the station. It was a short day, as far as trials go, but my client still offered to buy me a beer as we left the courthouse together.

Edit: Back to the Bundy trial, I read a short Facebook blurb about Jury Nullification in this trial. Seems like a likely explanation to me.

Jury Nullification is exactly right. Google Jury Nullification and you'll see what i mean. Shades of Emmit Till, or for that matter the trial of Joseph Smith's murderers. :sad:

I give God all the credit. God was certainly looking out for his true people and heard the prayers of the faithful patriots of this great nation. Thank you all who took the knee and prayed for our release. Especially you ldsfaqs. Yer a good kid.

What a small world!

Marcus Mumford is about my age, and played baseball for our rival Clifton (we played together on the Weston/Clifton All Star team, around 1983-1984 in Idaho). It's definitely him --- he stuttered pretty badly, and in the video at the end of the article in the OP, he has a bad stutter. He also mentions growing up on a dairy farm. Marcus Mumford isn't a common name.

I sent the article to my parents in Poland. My dad would remember me bowling over him at home plate, Pete Rose style, in a game.

Can anyone beat two degrees of separation with Ammon Bundy . . . :smile:
