The court system having assumed custody of the child, while the parents try to fight the battle of their life for his life, knowing that the outcome likely won't provide a miracle but still, they want a chance. All these folks criticizing them for their efforts. When they aren't in love with Charlie Gard.

For the record, I at least am not criticising this child's parents 'for their efforts' at all. They are entitled to do their best for their child as they see it, and it is unreasonable to expect them to take a rational and balanced view of his situation and prospects.

I am however glad that the law provides that it shall not always be the parents who take the final decision about what is to happen to a child. They are, sadly, often too desperately ready to see hope when there is really none, or very near none. It's their job as parents to be like that, of course.

(CNN)The parents of the terminally ill British baby Charlie Gard have given up their legal fight over treatment for their son in the US.

Their lawyer Grant Armstrong told the UK High Court Monday that experts have said that the "window of opportunity no longer exists."

"For Charlie, it is too late...treatment cannot offer a chance of success," he told the court.
Charlie's parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates made their decision following the latest medical reports and scans, the Press Association reported.

I think the problem is that the syndrome is so rare (Charlie, I believe was only the 17th diagnosis) that it makes research and development of experimental treatment difficult. There was some reported success with at least one other patient who had a similar form of the syndrome, so that was the best evidence they had that it could possibly help in Charlie's case. I hate to put it in these terms, but had Charlie been able to try the experimental treatment, his case might have served others and that opportunity is now lost.

It hasn't been mentioned yet so far as I can tell. I'm sure some reporter will dig that up and examine it.
