JWs banned in Russia. Mormons next?

"A ban on Jehovah’s Witnesses is to come into full force in Russia after a court dismissed an appeal against the group’s classification as an “extremist” organisation."

.............

Time for another meeting of the Brethren to see if they own enough senators.

Maybe, but I doubt it. They may be more restricted in their activities though. JW's have some dumb peculiarities about things like blood, but it's probably their unpatriotic beliefs like not going to war that get them into trouble with an authoritarian regime like Putin's.

For now, Mormonism is probably pretty safe...

The White House announced Tuesday night that President Trump intends to nominate former Gov. Jon Huntsman of Utah to be U.S. ambassador to Russia.

It's kind of funny that a few years ago, Trump refused to take a call from Huntsman, because Trump said Huntsman gave American away to China (presumably in his role as ambassador).

Read what you will into him being appointed to Russia...

for what it's worth
Halfway through her Mormon mission, Sariah Warnick had to stop being what she was: a missionary.

No more knocking on doors in a quixotic quest for converts. No more handing out pamphlets on the street about her religion's birth here on Earth or its views of life after death. No more doctrinal discussions about prayer, prophets or priesthood in the homes of would-be members.

In fact, in a move as symbolic as it was mandatory, "Sister Warnick" could not wear her iconic black name tag identifying her as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I think the Church is Russia has largely already gotten away with it by comparison.
I wonder what commercial investment they've committed to in return?

I know that the church was helping Armand Hammer in the early 80s with fishing rights in the waters of the USSR. Well, a few BYU law school types and Rex Lee, anyway. I always wondered where that went. One of the lawyers bragged about it in my presence once and he went on to become a law professor and international activist for the church.

No senators needed. We have the ambassador!

The LDS Church secured a small legal victory in Russia recently, when that nation's Constitutional Court ruled that two Mormon volunteers — formerly known as missionaries — were wrongly deported.

In 2016, Nathaniel Joseph Worden and Parker Drake Oldham, both U.S. citizens, arrived in Samara as volunteers to provide "spiritual support to Samara members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," according to a release on the faith's Russian news website, "and received a migration registration at the location of the church's religious organization."

Area police, however, considered "registration at that address an administrative violation," the release said, and "evicted and deported" the pair.

The Utah-based faith appealed the action in court, arguing that the church's "Religious Association (its designation in Russia) was "trying to do everything to ensure their temporary stays in [the] country are documented in accordance with the law, and we strictly control their conduct."

Russia's Constitutional Court ruled that there was "lack of clarity" in the statutes governing migration, which led to confusion over legal registration.

"We are pleased to note that the Constitutional Court has agreed with our position,"the church said in its release.

Last July, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law an anti-terrorism measure that strictly regulates religious work. The legislation increases phone and social media surveillance while seeking penalties for online extremism — including fines of up to $15,000 and possible deportation for conducting religious missionary work in private residences.

The LDS Church immediately took steps to limit its proselytizing in the country (even reducing the number of missions it has there from seven to six) and has repeatedly stated that its members and volunteers will "honor, sustain and obey the law."

"While we don't always agree with the restrictions or regulations placed on our volunteers and missionaries," LDS Church spokesman Doug Andersen has said, "we always abide by those rules and teach our volunteers and missionaries to do so as well."

Regarding the two deportations, the Constitutional Court also ruled that the legal actions regarding the cases of Worden and Oldham "need to be reviewed."

For their part, the two former volunteers said in the release "they were satisfied" by the decision.

Worden said he "loves Russia, where he spent a few unforgettable months, and the unjust deportation has not changed his feelings toward the country and its people."

Oldham said he hopes for a just resolution of the dispute and believes that he will be able to visit Russia again someday.

Now that is what real persecution on religious freedom looks like. The claim that religious freedom in the US is under attack is ridiculous.

With her new employer, perhaps Megan Kelly will back off the war on Christmas. However, with Sean Hannity being the reigning spokesperson for Trump at the Fox Advocacy Group, I suspect he will throw his efforts into an all out pro-Grinch campaign.
