Well, I am a pragmatist. I'm also a pessimist when it comes to real politik. What's inevitable is cycle after cycle of special interests getting the compromise you're talking about, absolutely ensuring we head towards where we find ourselves today. There is progress (whatever that means), but there exists regressive tendencies so strong within our system that change generally happens in spite of our governance rather than as a result of it. Representative democracy is a surefire way of pissing off virtually everyone at one point or another, and in many cases all the time. Just look at the various competing thoughts on this one thread alone. Not only is getting your way not going to happen, but even getting some of your way is generally impossible.

The vast majority of people on "food assistance" are obese. They need food assistance like LDSFAQs needs free WiFi. Also, I didn't say cut it out entirely. Those who are elderly, legitimately disabled (not fat-disabled like LDSFAQs), or under a BMI of 28 could qualify.
