SPANISH FORK, Utah -- Police said a mother and father were arrested after they gave their newborn daughter drugs on the day she was born, CBS affiliate KUTV in Salt Lake City reports.

Colby Glen Wilde, 29, and 26-year-old Lacey Dawn Christenson face drug distribution and child endangerment charges, authorities said.

"They administered the drug hours after baby was born," said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, a Utah County Sheriff's spokesperson.

Authorities said investigators learned Christenson had been taking heroin and prescription pain medication during pregnancy because her child was born addicted to drugs. They said parents of drug addicted babies typically crush up Suboxone or methadone and apply it to the gums of an infant to mask signs of addiction.

Wilde admitted that he applied crushed Suboxone pills to the infant's gums after the child's birth on April 9th while nurses and medical staffers were out of the room, police said. Suboxone is a prescription pain medication used for addiction treatment.

Ironically just earlier today I was having a conversation with someone in real life about the young acquaintance I mentioned on another thread who is on life support in a trauma unit as I write this. And I basically expressed what I'd been writing about on that other thread. Why him? Why him? Why not some scum of the earth criminal or drug dealer who through our tax dollars, we're going to incarcerate and provide food, clothing and shelter until they come out and do it all again?

I try not to think that way because it's not productive and doesn't change anything else but my mood, but then I open an article like the above and hey, there it is right there in front of my eyes.

I hope they're both going through the unaided detox from hell and never lay eyes or hands on their child ever again.
