Three Square Market is offering to implant the tiny radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip into workers' hands for free - and says everyone will soon be doing it. The rice grain-sized $300 (£230) chip will allow them to open doors, log in to computers and even purchase food. And so far, 50 employees have signed up for the chance to become half-human, half-walking credit card. ... Three Square Market are even working with a Swedish company, BioHax, to deliver the new technology, which they see as one day being simply another payment and identification method - only instead of a credit card or phone, there would be a microchip between your thumb and finger.
I recall reading over the past several years about this chip tech being used in Asian healthcare markets and in the company's native Sweden (https://www.theverge.com/2014/5/19/5730 ... s-ada-poon). While it seemed to get little attention here in the US, i consider this to be a potential watershed technological moment. My previous understanding was that this tech was being used to store a patient's health history, which was apparently useful in rural Asia etc. However, now that the push is towards a more casual interface - especially consumer oriented - are we approaching a Lo-Jack moment in technology? Is this inevitably going to be the new ankle bracelet?
I appreciate how their Facebook page states that they are "always open".....and find it odd that they have readily findable Facebook and Twitter sites...but not an actual homepage on the interwebs.
get your stock portfolio behind this tech (not necessarily biohax) because it definitely will become widespread across 3rd world countries (even more than already)
are the implications of this type of tech and this type of "thinking" beyond our current culture's intellect and ability? Is this another example of doing something simply because we can and we will just let God sort it out whenever and however?

i find it fascinating on many levels...perhaps too many to even have a single discussion.

I think it's a bit of reach, and a bit arrogant. I am not convinced that going faster with what we have now will get somewhere "else". I am inclined, given history of tech, that you can't program or formulate for the happy little mistakes. It's almost counter-evolutionary.

I'm no Luddite, but this makes no sense to me. Maybe for people with obvious emotional health problems IE; senile, dementia, and the like. For the average person not so much.

I'm not worried about this one. Smart Phones keep quite good track of us and while implanted chips will have some areas of real use, I suspect it will be less popular then google glass. There are a lot more areas I would be concerned about then a chip implant.

What areas top your list?
And it seems that implants are significantly more imposing than a handheld phone.

A lot of has been done on manipulating people in how we think and believe. This is getting worse, and as capabilities increase we may not just be able to read people's minds better, but may even be able to start to change and control our thoughts. Our minds are really just a complicated computer. Changes in our brains and bodies affect how we think and act. Drugs are a good example of how we can change our brains usually with unintentional consequences.

Which is why it will not catch on anytime soon, but with smart phones and so many other devices like home appliances which now many can listen to everything we say, the potential for big brother is certainly growing. Law enforcement is certainly using it to catch more people committing crimes. It's a positive thing, but there are privacy concerns.
