God almighty!

Police officers cheered as President Donald Trump urged them to use petty violence against suspected criminals — and social media users reacted in outrage and horror.

“When you see these towns and when you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just see them thrown in, rough, I said, please don’t be too nice,” Trump told police officers Friday during a speech in Long Island.

“Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over, like, don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody — don’t hit their head,” he added. I said, you can take the hand away, okay?”

Twitter users weren’t sure whether to be more appalled by the president or the police officers who roared in approval.

These people are suspects, not convicts.

But it seems that Trump no longer considers that to be an essential distinction. How long before he goes full Duterte route of 'shoot the people you think are criminals to save us the trouble of a trial, and I'll see you are covered'?

With the rare except of Capital Crimes the only legal punishment we have in the US is restriction of liberty. IE; Time served in jail/prison. We used to rightly condemn extrajudicial punishment by other countries, and by our own. We are so done as a country of laws not of men.

This is the same man who took out a full page add in the NYT calling for the execution of four black teens who were suspects in a rape. They were later acquitted but Trump still stands by his claim that they're guilty and deserve to be killed by the State.

This potentially opens the gates of Hell to the police officers, and the governments they work for. Serious fines, lawsuits, firings, and jail time for all involved. I don't recommend violence against anyone, but this is a open invitation to those that see nothing wrong with going with guns after their oppressors.

Actually, they were all convicted and they all served between 6 and 13 years in prison before the real rapist confessed and DNA evidence exonerated them. It was a terrible injustice, and Trump was the guy leading the Lynch mob in 1989. It would be forgivable if he ever apologized, but he still thinks they were guilty. Apparently DNA evidence is fake news.

I've been thinking a lot lately about one of the quotes in my signature line:
Will Durant wrote:History is a process of rebarbarization.

It strikes me that what is going on in America, like what went on in fascist Germany, is a process of rebarbarization. We are becoming less civilized in our conduct, in our language, and in our thinking.

Maybe Trump just wanted the police officers to experience a moment of euphoria.

Outside of his RNC convention speech, this was the most overtly malevolent speech from Trump I've heard.

And the laughter and wild cheering he got from the police in attendance when he implored police brutality tells you it's more than just a few bad apples in police departments when it comes to acceptance of improper use of force.

Two other quick thoughts:

1) While Trump is a quite unpopular president in general, especially for the economic circumstances, he is quite popular among those in security fields. This dynamic is dangerous.

2) Someday, hopefully soon, Trump will have to plead with the public that a person is innocent until proven guilty and should be treated accordingly.
