“There is such unity in the First Presidency and the Twelve on this subject. The President has spoken; the Lord has spoken to the President,” Neil L. Andersen said in a news release. "God does not want to hear you utter the words Mormon or LDS again, no ifs, ands, butts or bare shoulders."

‘We know it’s going to be a challenge,’ Nelson says, but the church’s proper name is ‘not negotiable’ — ‘It’s not Mormon’s church'."

The official name of the church was changed multiple times under the direction of Joseph Smith who claimed revelation in each case. But think about that for a moment. Was it man coming up with new names or was it God getting it right the first time?

You see, Joseph Smith was the one who thought up the names and presented them as if it was what God wanted. Each time it was supposed to reflect the mind and will of God. But you know what? God had nothing to do with it. It was Joseph Smith who came up with the first name and it was Joseph Smith who came up with the last. Joseph Smith is the original author of Mormonism. It was his idea and he called the shots.

Putting it into a timeline...

April 1979 Marion G. Romney
https://www.lds.org/general-conference/ ... s?lang=eng
Members of the Church do not resent being referred to as Mormons, nor does the Church resent being referred to as the Mormon church. As we have said, however, it is not the correct name of the Church. Its correct name is, as we have already explained, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (D&C 115:4).
This name was officially confirmed by Jesus Christ himself when, on April 26, 1838, at Far West, Missouri, in a revelation addressed to the presiding officers of the Church, he said—and this is Christ himself speaking:
“Verily thus saith the Lord unto you, my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and also . . . unto all the elders and people of my Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, scattered abroad in all the world;
“For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” (D&C 115:1, 3–4; italics added.)
Interestingly, Romney went on to proclaim...
Not only did the Redeemer personally name his Church, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” as recounted already in these remarks, he also declared it to be “the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased” (D&C 1:30).

Today I would like to speak about a name. We are all pleased when our names are pronounced and spelled correctly. Sometimes a nickname is used instead of the real name. But a nickname may offend either the one named or the parents who gave the name.
The name of which I shall speak is not a personal name, yet the same principles apply. I refer to a name given by the Lord:
“Thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” (D&C 115:4.)
Note carefully the language of the Lord. He did not say, “Thus shall my church be named.” He said, “Thus shall my church be called.” Years ago, its members were cautioned by the Brethren who wrote: “We feel that some may be misled by the too frequent use of the term ‘Mormon Church.’” (Member-Missionary Class—Instructor’s Guide, Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1982, p. 2.) Before any other name is considered to be a legitimate substitute, the thoughtful person might reverently consider the feelings of the Heavenly Parent who bestowed that name.
And concluded...
He issued this solemn warning: “Let all men beware how they take my name in their lips.” “Remember,” He added, “that which cometh from above is sacred, and must be spoken with care.” (D&C 63:61, 64.) Therefore, just as we revere His holy name, we likewise revere the name that He decreed for His church.
As members of His church, we are privileged to participate in its divine destiny. May we so honor Him who declared, “Thus shall my church be called . . . The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” I pray in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Many of our people are disturbed by the practice of the media, and of many others, to disregard totally the true name of the Church and to use the nickname “the Mormon Church.”
Six months ago in our conference Elder Russell M. Nelson delivered an excellent address on the correct name of the Church. He quoted the words of the Lord Himself:
“Thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” (D&C 115:4.)

I suppose that regardless of our efforts, we may never convert the world to general use of the full and correct name of the Church. Because of the shortness of the word Mormon and the ease with which it is spoken and written, they will continue to call us the Mormons, the Mormon church, and so forth.
And concluded...
I testify that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and that when people speak of us by the name of this book, they will compliment us, if we will live worthy of the name, remembering that in a very real sense Mormonism must mean that greater good which the Lord Jesus Christ exemplified. I so pray in His holy name, even the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Which makes it all the more odd that these same people would sanction the following...

2010 - 2014 “I’m A Mormon Campaign”
https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/ ... n-campaign
The Church's national media campaign called “I’m a Mormon” (launched in 2010) included television spots, billboards, and ads on buses and on the Internet. The ads give a glimpse into the lives of Latter-day Saints from all over the world and refer people to the Mormon.org website, where they can read the profiles of tens of thousands of Mormons, chat live with representatives who will answer questions about the faith and watch dozens of videos about members of the Church.

Before then saying...
April 2014 M. Russell Ballard

This may be why I have felt the clear impression to follow up today on two of my previous general conference messages.
In the October 2011 conference, I urged that we remember these important words of the Lord: “For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”1
With these words, the Lord makes clear that this is not only a formal title but also the name by which His Church is to be called. Given His clear declaration, we should not refer to the Church by any other name, such as “Mormon Church” or “LDS Church.”
The term Mormon can be appropriately used in some contexts to refer to members of the Church, such as Mormon pioneers, or to institutions, such as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Church members are widely known as Mormons, and in interactions with those not of our faith, we may fittingly refer to ourselves as Mormons, provided we couple this with the full name of the Church.
If members learn to use the correct name of the Church in connection with the word Mormon, it will underscore that we are Christians, members of the Savior’s Church.
Brothers and sisters, let us follow up and develop the habit of always making it clear that we belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

But then authorised...

October 2014 “Meet The Mormons”

July 2016 “Meet The Mormons 2”

February 2018 “Meet Mormons 3”
https://www.lds.org/church/news/meet-th ... t?lang=eng
The newest video in the Meet the Mormons series depicts a show pilot who for many years has constructed his own airplanes and done flight acrobatics at air shows.
“The Craftsman” will premiere Saturday, February 10, at Church visitors’ centers and historic sites, the latest in a string of stand-alone vignettes that began with breakouts from the original, feature-length movie that premiered in 2014. It will culminate later this year with the premier of one more vignette, signaling the end of the Meet the Mormons franchise.

Before re-iterating...

August 2018 Russell M. Nelson
https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/ ... the-church
The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with His will. In recent weeks, various Church leaders and departments have initiated the necessary steps to do so. Additional information about this important matter will be made available in the coming months.
“When we are confronted with evidence that challenges our deeply held beliefs we are more likely to reframe the evidence than we are to alter our beliefs. We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

I think it's safe to say That Tommy Boy Monson had no problem with using the name Mormon to represent the church and its people. Monson liked the name Mormon! Obviously, this is so. But, Nelson, who probably had some real disdain for the prophet had what reflexzero said earlier (a bee in his bonnet) and never agreed with the campaign but simply went along with it because he had no choice.

Now Nelson has struck back. He's thrown Tommy Boy Monson under the bus and the church has now been formerly told that the previous prophet led them astray. It's all about Nelson's ego -- his pet peeve. It has absolutely nothing to do with what an Almighty loving God thinks. It's all about ego and personal opinion -- a power play.

Nelson is scum.
