Elder Corbridge,

Your church is a sewer. The leaders of your church are sewer rats.

Mormonism is evil. It's a disease on the earth. It needs to be stripped down and cast into the fire.

Listen up people, according to elder Corbridge, you are singing in a dark choir. You are lost in a state of darkness in the midst of a swamp of secondary questions.

I just finished listening to this podcast. Very well done. I don't know why TBMs would forward this to their "struggling" family and friends. The circular reasoning is cringeworthy. I really liked your Mark Hofmann Salamander Letter example, and I hope I get the chance to use that some day.

Having now listened to both episodes, I have a question for Elder Corbridge. Would he advocate the same methodology for people of other faiths trying to ascertain the truthfulness of their chosen religion? For instance, Scientologist, Catholic’s, Moonies, FLDS, etc. If not, why not? And if he did, and they ascertained their chosen religion was true, then where does that leave Elder Corbridge?

I would also note that what Elder Corbridge is advocating as a methodology for determining truth, is exactly why so many Mormons fall foul to Scams and Affinity Frauds.

Of course not. Why? Because the Mormons are right from the get-go and everyone else is wrong.

Mormon Man God sitting atop his throne looking over his adoring crowd of baptized Mormons is the only way.

There. Simple as that.

Corbridge’s references to a feeling of “gloom” is absolutely deliberate. He is incorporating by reference Joel 2:1-2, which according to LDS tradition is a last days prophecy. Specifically, a prophesy about clouds of thick darkness that will separate the spiritually blind from whose who rise above it. Choose to wade through the darkness (read: material antagonistic to any of the 4 primary questions) and you should expect to feel gloom. The gloom is a sign you’re mired in thick darkness. A choice to ignore that material is therefore a choice to be a great and strong person who rises into the mountains.

War and desolation will precede the Second Coming—The sun and the moon will be darkened—The Lord will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh—There will be dreams and visions.

1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

Of note, Dan Vogel points out in his Joseph Smith biography that Joel 2:1-2 was likely an inspiration for the “thick darkness” that covered the land of Nephi for 3 days after the crucifixion. If so then the same Old Testament verses are responsible for describing the literal circumstances the first-coming of Jesus and the figurative circumstances of the minds of men before the second coming.

Quite a bit of mileage for the effort, Joel!

There is no evidence sufficient to convince me. There is also many evidences that suggest there is no God.

2. Is Jesus Christ the Son of God, the Savior of the world?
There is no evidence sufficient to convince me. There is also many evidences that suggest this is not the case.

3. Was Joseph Smith a prophet?
Sure, the question is was he a true or false prophet? It is the 'secondary' questions that address this question, and this is very messy.

4. Is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the kingdom of God on the earth?
Like the first three questions, one cannot objectively declare absolutes, one can only consider probabilities. Like question 3 it is only the secondary questions that must be analyzed to come up with any probabilities of this being true. The existing evidences found in recent history (less than 200 years) leave this probability extremely low.

Number one has to come first. Oh, I see that it does in your list.

Everything else must follow number one. Oh,I see that they do.

But for 2, 3, 4 to be entertained at all, number one is an axiom of belief:

http://peacefulscience.org/the-axiom-of-belief/

Elder Corbridge is suggesting that there are primary and secondary questions. If the primaries are entertained as being possible, then the secondary questions are interesting to speculate about. They can be taken down off the shelf and looked at carefully. Some questions will go back upon the shelf. Others, through study, prayer, and time...will not.

In regards to your number one may I suggest the writings of Alvin Plantinga.

For me, as I've mentioned periodically on this board, the change from disbelief/doubt in the restoration story...years ago...occurred after I was able to 'warrant' a belief in God. Everything else followed. I think this goes right along with what Elder Corbridge is proposing. We must be 'on board' with the 'primaries' before we can look at the secondary questions. Looking at and focusing solely upon the secondary questions may ultimately take us away from the blessings which may result from acceptance of the first four primaries in your list.

MG
