Joe's Family - when did they tell of persecution and vision?

Joe apparently was tight lipped about his first vision, persecution and such.

When did his family members first start telling of it or start writing about it?

They lived with it for a long time, right? So, wouldn't they make note of it and how difficult things were as a result? Wouldn't they notice Joe getting picked on and all the meanies hanging around looking for Joe to beat him up?

All that excitement and persecution - yet somehow it appears they were able to ignore it.
