Trump suggests delaying presidential election as dire economic data released
Trump makes incendiary proposal after repeating false claim that mail-in voting would result in ‘fraudulent’ results

Donald Trump on Thursday morning floated the idea of delaying November’s presidential election, justifying the extraordinary suggestion by repeating his false claim that widespread voting by mail from home would result in a “fraudulent” result.

Trump’s incendiary proposal was dropped in a Thursday morning tweet, as the US was reeling from bad economic news, digesting the death toll of 150,000 having been reached in the coronavirus pandemic and preparing for the funeral of Congressman John Lewis in Atlanta. In it he claimed without evidence that “universal mail-in voting” would lead to “the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT election in history”.

Trump, pontificating that the result would be a “great embarrassment to the USA”, he raised the prospect of a postponement. “Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???” he tweeted.

The idea that the US president should suggest a delay in a ballot that will decide whether or not he stays in the White House for another four years is certain to inflame fears that he is preparing for a fierce battle that could threaten the integrity of US democracy. Recent polls have him falling significantly behind his Democratic rival Joe Biden.

Trump has already indicated that he might not accept a Biden victory on election day, 3 November. In a recent interview with Fox News Sunday he declined to commit to abiding by the results.

The idea that voting from home in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic would lead to an explosion of fraud has become a growing theme for Trump. Most states have a long history of administering mail-in voting, without any significant incidence of fraud.

Trump himself and numerous members of his administration, including Vice-President Mike Pence, have voted by mail.

First, the good news. At this point the idea has virtually no traction, and I doubt if it will.

The President wants millions of children to return to school every day, but we can't hold an election? Trump has said he is more Presidential than anyone, except for Abraham Lincoln*. Lincoln had his re-election during a Civil War.

Pathetic.

I think someone should counter that he is doing such a bad job we need to accelerate the election so we can get his replacement in sooner. Skip the conventions, save time and ad dollars and cut to the chase of firing our underperforming executive. Then see how he feels about it.

Yes, I would certainly be in favor of accelerating the election, if that were constitutionally possible. The sooner we can get rid of Trump, the better chance our democratic republic has of surviving. His resignation before the election would be even better. If his approval rating continues to sink, there is a slim but perhaps increasing possibility that he might attempt to save some face by resigning, rather than face the more humiliating prospect of a landslide defeat. That way, if Pence loses, Trump can attempt to blame Pence for the GOP losing the Presidency, instead of himself.

On the other hand, though, Trump probably realizes that winning reelection is probably way to avoid prosecution for the many corrupt and illegal things he has done, both before and since his election. I would guess that his desperation to avoid just prosecution is probably greater than any desire or hope he might have to save face by stepping down before he suffers a humiliating electoral defeat.
No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

If we can mail in our IRS tax returns, we can sure as heck vote by mail. We here at the Jersey Homestead vote by mail every year.

Almost seems like Trump is sending up trial balloons checking for support on the idea of him remaining as a dictator. I am guessing his core supporters would go for this idea.

Trump can suggest anything he wants to suggest because its still a free country. But lets let people who don't understand how their government works run into the street, hair ablaze, screaming.

Not gonna take that bet. I'd lose. Other possibilities:

US bets No Trump
Trump show cancelled
Putin Weeps
Hold on till January 20th
Melania files for divorce
Stephen Miller returns to crypt
He went to Jared
Trump defeated - moves Capital to Mar-a-Lago.

....actually we should break this out as its own topic...

On a more serious note:
Abraham Lincoln - November 10, 1864
We can not have free government without elections; and if the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone a national election it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us.
