Parenting 101: Tantrums

So there I was being safer at home in the vast great outdoors when I came across this video on YouTube done by a parent with a 3 year old child in tantrum. I don't like that he let her know that he was filming her for the public because there could be a shame element to that (clearly some parents go too far on social media) but he does not really humiliate his daughter and I'm happy that he posted this because he's a Dad who has his collective s-hit together and shows right on camera, what happens when you do NOT give life to a tantrum. And how it will draw the behavior sequence to a close in short order. I have seen parents engage a tantrum which is the exact opposite of how to address it. Once you start responding to a child in tantrum, you being to feed the tantrum because you are putting your child on even more overload than they already are.

It's a little like when your dog barks incessantly and you yell at it to shut up. You've actually created a dialogue at that point. ;-)

If you want to help your child move through the tantrum, you simply starve the tantrum. Let your child "blow", discharge their feelings, and return to the relationship with an air of reassurance. This is part of your bonding and attachment process. This is one way to build trust.

Why do young children tantrum? Because they are tired and frustrated. They are growing up in a world they are only beginning to understand and they lack the language skills with which to express themselves. They might be dealing with too much activity, parents keeping them out when they need to be home, or they might have missed a meal or a snack. Their little nervous systems kick into high gear and off they go.
