Maybe her grandma had planted seeds of heightened sensitivity.

Another possibility… BYUs starter Libero has last name of “Clinger.”

The Libero is the player responsible for receiving and bumping the serve. So on opponent serve, informed fans would be cheering for that person specifically.

Richardson could have heard fans yelling “Clinger!”

The U. notes that there have been four racist incidents on campus in the past year. That also includes a bomb threat at the school’s Black Cultural Center in January, as well as two students who reportedly shouted a racist slur at a worker as he delivered a delivery to a loading dock in the dormitories in September.

I’m starting to think this isn’t just a BYU thing here in Utah …

Seems it doesn’t matter if Rachel heard something from all the “cou—garrs” in the crowd. Really doesn’t matter.

I agree I think she heard what she perceived as a racial slur, even if that wasn't what came out of any one person's mouth. See the Rockies and Dinger incident. I think it's gotten blown up. I also think there is no self reflection for BYU fans about how they have a reputation for being bad fans. This extends to Utahns and Mormons in general. Utah Jazz fans have a reputation for being the worst in the NBA. At least other teams/college fans have the crutch of blaming alcohol, but Mormons prove you don't need to have alcohol to have fun, or be abusive.

On my mission I think shortly before I got there the mission president was considering banning basketball on P day. It was causing too many injuries and problems. It was still going to be okay to play pick up games, just as long as it wasn't church ball with other missionaries. The threat got through though and and things cleaned up real quick. They knew if it got banned there wasn't much hope for breaking the rules without the mission president catching wind.

Great points. For this reason it would be unfair for anyone to label this a hoax or false accusation. It’s just part of growing up, institutionally, and BYU - as an extension of the church - has a lot of growing up to do.

Haven't clicked on any of the links in this thread but has anyone considered this whole story might have to do with bringing to light the fact that racial prejudice is still alive and well inside the LDS church and that they're trying to draw attention to the fact that it is still in canonized scripture that black skin is a curse from God?
