John Dehlin was excommunicated in 2015. I'm convinced the church felt confident that by excommunicating John they would be greatly reducing his influence and reach.

Whatever you feel about John Dehlin, you can't deny the massive influence and reach he has. He has made the church confront many uncomfortable truths and has educated millions. The church should not have struck down John Dehlin. He has become more influential than the church could have possibly imagined.
