In a staggering lack of self awareness the Afore opines as follows…
A few voices from the peanut gallery at the Deseret News suggest that Latter-day Saints need to search their own souls to find the reasons for such crowd behavior. However, while self-examination and reflection are never inappropriate, the suggestion seems to me rather like expecting attractive young women to feel guilty for the catcalls that they sometimes receive when they walk past a construction site, or — if we want to be really serious — holding Jews responsible for antisemitic attacks. They must have done something to bring this upon themselves, right?
Has Peterson forgotten that his own Church Leaders have long blamed girls and how they dressed for boys bad behaviour? Here’s just one example…
“What tempts the boys to molest the girls today more than any other one thing… is the mode of dress of our girls — skirts above the knees, tight and revealing tops, and low-cut evening gowns. When such sights are placed before their eyes, almost like an invitation, can you blame them any more than you would [the girls who tempt them], if they take advantage of those girls?”
According to your Church Dan, attractive young women are expected to feel guilty for the catcalls that they sometimes receive when they walk past a construction site. Your Church would want the attractive young women to dress and groom in a fashion that wouldn’t lead those poor construction workers into the temptation of noticing them.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.
It isn't the crowd behavior that is the issue. It is the selective accusation of bigotry when the leaders leave racist statements in their own scripture. It is also the stance of never apologizing and the mindset of looking forward instead of back. It is also the long track record of victim blaming by top leaders including the likes of walking pornography, assuming some responsibility for being abused and others.
This is the sort of thing that totally depends on the context, and what does he need to make himself a victim? On the one hand, as a Mormon, he's suffered persecution just like the Jews of the Holocaust. On the other hand, the Jews should really think about how few friends they have in the world when they deny Mormons the right to baptize their dead relatives.
Materialism does something with regard to the world that would be absurd with regard to a work of art, namely to explain it through the qualities—and quantities—of the materials of which it consists
Not necessarily. The work of art supervenes on the materials. Without the materials the art wouldn't exist, or does Dan now deny that a painting can exist without the paint?
"if you can't admire Joe Biden as a person then it's probably, you got a problem." -- Lindsey Graham
Gee, is this the same person that was recently bellyaching at the notion that anyone would dare accuse him of being disrespectful towards other faiths?
"If, while hoping that everybody else will be honest and so forth, I can personally prosper through unethical and immoral acts without being detected and without risk, why should I not?." --Daniel Peterson, 6/4/14
the Jews should really think about how few friends they have in the world when they deny Mormons the right to baptize their dead relatives.
I still can’t believe DCP actually wrote that. It gets even more disgusting as time goes on.
I know. The first time I heard about it, it was not in quotes so I thought it was possibly an unfavorable interpretation, but no. I read the original, and his exact statement was exactly as bad as it is described. It reminds me of my first exposure to Peterson, when he posted a very graphic historic picture of an actual lynching, and wrote something about how he was being persecuted similarly, which If I recall correctly he later tried to justify as a 'joke.' It horrified me that he would use a picture like that, and I ended up here where people were discussing it.
