OK then, you go with option #2, "Mormons are Christian heretics, Mormons practice baptism for the dead, therefore Christian heretics practice baptism for the dead."

No, I don’t; heretic is your term, not mine. It is, moreover, a pejorative and a divisive term that militant dogmatists like you are wont to impose on those who are disinclined toward theological groupthink.

My point was (which you obviously didn't grok)…

Sure, I’ll grok your point if you grok mine…but only if you buy me dinner first.

So if you want to add qualifiers to what types of Mormons practice polygamy and how they practice it, then the Christian is allowed to do the same and qualify what kind of Christian practices baptism for the dead. You don't get to play "heads I win, tails you lose."

In other words, "my-mythology-is-better-than-your-mythology".

When one thinks one of the options is not mythology...

Think whatever you want, friend. I’ll do the same.

If you really think both Christianity and Mormonism are obviously mythological, why are you wasting your time with all of this?

Gotta do something when I’m not busy engaging in unnatural acts banned in the State of Mississippi.

Mormons perform baptisms for the dead.

Therefore, baptisms for the dead is Christian.

But what you're really trying to say here is that Mormons aren't Christian, right?

Your logic is sound...just out of order.
Mormons perform baptisms for the dead
Christians are Mormons
Therefore, baptisms for the dead is Christian.

Corpsegrinder,

My apologies. I wasn't aware you are part of the village atheist brigade here at MD. Sorry to waste your time (and even more sorry I wasted mine). No need to reply, I won't see your posts anymore.

Striking how quickly this dude ran away. I’d assumed the foot soldiers of the Evangelical counter-cult were a bit tougher than this. Guess I was wrong.

OK, newbie here, with a question.

If baptism is as you state above, then this is something that can only be decided upon by the individual receiving it. That, coupled with the ideas behind the 'age of consent' would not seem to grant much authority to a proxy.

And, if the change in faith saves you - as opposed to the ritual itself - then when the individual has passed beyond the physical, why would the physical practice of immersion in water be necessary... especially given that the individual would presumably be fully aware of what the Afterlife holds after passing away and could make the decision to accept Christ or not themselves at that point (prior knowledge of the Gospel notwithstanding)?

Another newbie with a question.

If baptism for the dead is done through genealogy, then surely there are millions of people that are undocumented that this ritual couldn't be carried out on? What happens to these? Are they damned for all time?

Don't worry, it will all be sorted out in the next life....

I remember officiating at a baptistery session in the temple.
A baptism was conducted for 'Mary'.
No date of birth, no location, no parents, no surname, no siblings, no nothing. Just the one word 'Mary'. How's that one going to work?

no one has said they are "damned" at all either for short time or all time.
However, the assumption that those who are undocumented will never ever be documented is unsupported.
Perhaps there will always be those who remain in the tomb of the unknown, but for us to speculate at what the future will or will not bring is rather irrelevant.
I would be curious how you would go about proving that there is, in fact, someone incapable of ever being undocumented or that has never been documented by any means.
