I couldn't agree more. Many, many years ago, one of my student's group presentations was on the true economic cost of war, arguing that the full cost should be factored in to decision-making. One of their main points of emphasis was that rapidly increasing costs of veteran's post-service (and frequently lifetime needs related to) healthcare were not being fully anticipated and accounted for, and were therefore an externality that was not being adequately factored in and was bring improperly imposed on veterans, their families and their communities.
Failure to account for and accept full responsibility for this externality results in the costs being imposed on innocent victims. It's a straightforward way to describe the public policy issue, but I have to say, this was one of the most sobering and emotional presentations I ever had from my students.
A significant amount of money has been raised by members of the church and supporters for the family of the alleged shooter, Thomas Jacob Sanford, through online fundraisers orchestrated mainly by church members. These online fundraisers have rapidly raised over $275,000, nearing $300,000, to support the shooter's family, including his wife and children who are considered victims of the tragedy as well.

It should be made clear that in this instance and in many others the LDS Church joins in with fellow community members of all different stripes to accomplish good works. The church obviously does not stand alone.

Joining together with their Christian brothers and sisters (and others) is not unknown/unusual for Latter-day Saints. But yes, for a person to spearhead this sort of thing under these circumstances is kind of awesome.

Joining together under adverse circumstances is a very human thing to do. But to support the family of the person who attacked their congregation is, in my opinion, exceptional.
