Imagine putting your business in the public realm, and feeling aghast that the public doesn’t slavishly devote themselves to a man’s reputation. What absolute buffoonery. He could’ve written a nice tribute without adding the apparent fact that this NCO aided and abetted a Captain’s adulterous lechery. Also, is his family cool with publishing his uncle’s battle with alcoholism resulting in the disastrous loss of his farm? - Doc

My father wouldn’t be caught dead doing such a thing. But then no one has painted his portrait.
He was a staff sergeant at the time, and one of the American captains assigned to High Wycombe regularly requisitioned him as a driver into London, where the V-1s and V-2s were raining down. Why? Because the captain, who had a wife back in the United States, was carrying on an affair with a female English military volunteer in the city. So my father was obliged to sit in London during the Captain’s adulterous trysts, under German assault.
The real measure of a man is what he does precisely when it is not expedient. DCP seems to follow his father closely in this regard.
Peterson senior had it all wrong, it was actually the Captain’s first plural marriage. Just like Joseph with Fanny in the barn.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

I use to be flabbergasted how believers claim they can detect the spit in a glass of water handed to them. And even more so when they claim to be able to drink around it. I now see how this skill is developed, refined and applied to every avenue of their life. It is indeed the Swiss Army knife of Mormon apologetics.

Here’s a painting of Staff Sergeant Peterson waiting outside an apartment in London while his Captain buddy was railing someone else’s wife:

Seems like clown blood runs strong in the family.

It is better that one uncle’s memory be tarnished than for his few dozen readers to dwindle in alcoholism. Or go without a feeling of smug self righteous teetotalism.

Personally I would have given my cigarettes for free rather than attempt to profit from them. But I’m just an amoral atheist who thinks we’re all random molecules in motion.

I'm guessing it was because the uncle wasn't Mormon, right?

This thread starts with a simple observation of an error and rapidly escalates into a tempest in a thimble.

I bet the Fancher party thought something similar.

Just another link in a long chain, in my view anyway.

As DCP is fond of saying, “it’s a cumulative case.”
