It may be a mistake or something. But Peterson senior will have been a similar age to another Mormon war hero, Paul H. Dunn. Perhaps Peterson senior was also prone to relating “parables”. I’m sure there’s a simple explanation.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

I’ve modified yesterday’s blog entry accordingly.

Working out the details of a narrative of family history is not the worst way to spend part of a Sabbath day. The trouble is that I have a lot of other things that I need to do.
Now do Joseph Smith's first vision.

Or even better, the Second Watson Letter™.

Remarkably enough, if you read his latest post with an eye of faith, you will see an acrostic that reads: “Thank you to those who pointed out the error.” (One will not find such an acknowledgment in the body of the post.)

So what was the correction?
…and, sadly, I don’t know where this happened…
That’s it. So where did Paris come from?
I placed that incident in Paris. Somehow, I’ve always thought of it as having occurred in Paris. Had I checked the relevant publicly available dates, though, I would have realized that it couldn’t have happened in Paris. And my wife was able to supply me with some materials that she had derived from my father’s few surviving letters, etc., that have clarified the situation for me. (Thanks to “Tom” for calling my attention to the chronological difficulty.)
High praise for “Tom”. Peterson goes on to relate a complete timeline for his father’s movements in 1945. If only he’d done that in the first place.

Isn't there something poignant in the fact you could be wrong about a timeline regarding a close family member however chronological events that happened hundreds of years ago is unmistakable and unshakable. It is telling in the phrase "I don't know why I thought it happened in....." keep going Dan you are all most there. Think deep about why people don't feel like their wrong. Because it feels just like being write.

Oh, he knows. He’s always been a phony, but lying comes naturally to Mormons because it’s baked into the culture. by the way, Dan-O, if your dad was passed over for MSG, maybe it was because he hadn’t made Sergeant First Class, first? Also, your dad was driving a US Army Captain to London so the latter could commit adultery. Maybe that factored into his lack of further promotions.

Hiring a part-time news entertainment anchor as SecDef, what could go wrong?

Yeah. But the painting of his dad makes him look like a saint, don’t ya think?

And his father was painted by a real artist that can be linked to... so, um... something or other.

I think it's supposed to both serve as deflection and somehow add credibility to the story. I'm not sure how it does either.

edit to add: For what it's worth, given the circumstances, the provided inscription is a little creepy.

To add the reference…
He was a staff sergeant at the time, and one of the American captains assigned to High Wycombe regularly requisitioned him as a driver into London, where the V-1s and V-2s were raining down. Why? Because the captain, who had a wife back in the United States, was carrying on an affair with a female English military volunteer in the city. So my father was obliged to sit in London during the Captain’s adulterous trysts, under German assault. At one point, the captain was standing by a window in his love nest, looking out and smoking a cigarette, when a bomb or a rocket exploded nearby. The window shattered, and a shard of glass scratched his face. He received a Purple Heart for having been wounded by enemy action.

Laralee Nelson: "For someone they hate, they certainly allow him to control a measurable portion of their lives."

And now, amazingly, some of them are edging into mockery of my Dad and attacks on his credibility and his military service.

That's why I don't identify relatives and friends in my blog posts who aren't already public figures and whose identity isn't necessary for the story. I don't want them to become collateral damage. Once, I imagined that not being a public figure and being dead would protect someone from their tender ministrations. Obviously, though, I was too optimistic.
The pearl clutching!

Who hasn’t driven a man around to cheat on his wife, after all? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

My father wouldn’t be caught dead doing such a thing. But then no one has painted his portrait.

The real measure of a man is what he does precisely when it is not expedient. DCP seems to follow his father closely in this regard.
