Being common doesn't make it right or pretty nor does it offer an excuse for men (BACK THEN OR NOW) to act like f-ing pigs that treat women like possessions! Polygamy *IS* an ugly event both THEN & NOW. Period. No excuses! I don't want to hear them.huckelberry wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2026 11:52 pmPolygamy was a common widespread social custom. I think it has negatives but still I hope Jacob and his wives enjoyed sex and were happy with children.

I did not wish to excuse polygamy. I observed its historical reality.

A manmade reality that does not reflect well on ancient Israel and its pretended views of having revelation to perform those acts.huckelberry wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2026 12:08 amI did not wish to excuse polygamy. I observed its historical reality.

I am not aware of any revelation about polygamy before DC 132. I suppose there are a number of things that do not reflect well on ancient Israel.Shulem wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2026 12:13 amA manmade reality that does not reflect well on ancient Israel and its pretended views of having revelation to perform those acts.huckelberry wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2026 12:08 amI did not wish to excuse polygamy. There may be a few chapters in Proverbs I missed. You speak as though I am missing something important. I have no idea what. We have discussed animal sacrifice, I agreed it is excessive. I am horrified by the conquest. Even though it did not happen the stories are ugly. Having children celebrate the walls of Jericho tumbling down may be teaching a bad message, etc. Perhaps your inclination for overstatement causes you to misread my inclination for understatement.

Re: Baptism
No worries, Huck, it's probably just me being a horse's ass which I often tend to be while arguing religion. Stories of polygamy in the Bible are certainly on full display beginning with Abraham who secured the Egyptian Hagar as his handmaid as directed by God in which Josephus said, "Accordingly Sarai, AT GOD’S COMMAND, brought to his bed one of her handmaidens, a woman of Egyptian descent." Then Jacob took things to a new level concerning polygamy and all this while under God's supervision being blessed in doing so as expressed in the narratives of Genesis chapters 29 & 30). The accounting between king Saul and Nathan the seer is another example to show how God was responsible for polygamy, "I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives."huckelberry wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2026 4:19 pmThere may be a few chapters in Proverbs I missed. Polygamy and the House of Israel go hand in hand.
