When will an Atheist be president?

Post by _The Dude »

A fun, speculative article about future minority presidents:

http://www.slate.com/id/2204472/

When the lion lies down with the lamb, when the president is a Republican Muslim and the Democratic speaker of the House is a vegan Mormon lesbian, when the secretary of defense is a Jain pacifist from the Green Party, they will all agree on one thing: atheists need not apply.

Nothing is going to startle us more when we pass through the veil to the other side than to realize how well we know our Father [in Heaven] and how familiar his face is to us

I am so old that I can remember when most of the people promoting race hate were white.

I tend to view religion (and theism) as what we do, and not what we say or pretend to believe, so I think it is likely we've already had a few atheist presidents who pretended they were Christian.

Anyone you can think of in the last 100 years? Or besides the founders?

Taft was a Unitarian, and he was in all likelihood an agnostic. He qualifies as being in the last 100 years barely.

I think times are changing. I think an atheist may be president in about 20 years.

What difference woudld it make if it were an atheist president?
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Didn't W have a hard time believing an atheist could be even a patriotic citizen?

Anyway, the rest of the world could rest a little easier knowing the prez didn't have some crazy apocalyptic views.

I have a hard time seeing Clinton (Bill) as anything other than a Xtian of convenience.

It was his dad.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

I would say Jefferson was our first Atheist President.
