Add to that the tribalism aspect that Steuss pointed out. "Look at those other folks playing into Totalitarianism, glad our team is way way way more better. We would never be suckers like them."
The described psychological effect is by no means solely attributable to totalitarian propaganda. Evaluating information responsibly is work, and increases to that workload contribute to apathy/burnout/cynicism or whatever else that pushes people to tune out or stop caring about justice, ethics, or other virtues they would otherwise believe themselves to embrace.
Is it work to just call something authoritarian or fascist? Is that hard hard hard the hardest work?

We see the board alive with people defending authoritarianism and telling us that they are not, but that it is the opponents of authoritarianism who are hoodwinked, wrong, and even subhuman.
Well, they're ignorant "F"s. It's not surprising.
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense. It's also the favored cover for hypocrites.

The god idea is popular with desperate people.

MAGA fans are literally paying people like this fellow below to share these views with them and validate their opinions about government and control. Not that the attitude expressed below is authoritarian or fascist-y in any way. ; )

A bit. It was banned in my house which is something we still laugh about.

How does your career and life stack up to this guy’s? Probably he wishes he was you, right?

It was banned in my house also. I could watch it at my friend's though. What were the reasons it was banned in yours?

In mine, it was 1) making fun of the law 2) Daisy

Boss Hogg was the law. He fought crime. Uncle Jesse and Bo and Luke were criminals. According to your worldview, fighting crime is an end to itself, so you shouldn't suggest that people are saying fighting crime is wrong unless you take into account the possibilities where fighting crime is a pretense for other things.

By the way, it looks like if you want to learn about fascism you'll need to use duckduckgo instead of Google now. That's fascism in action.
