The described psychological effect is by no means solely attributable to totalitarian propaganda. Evaluating information responsibly is work, and increases to that workload contribute to apathy/burnout/cynicism or whatever else that pushes people to tune out or stop caring about justice, ethics, or other virtues they would otherwise believe themselves to embrace.

Is it work to just call something authoritarian or fascist? Is that hard hard hard the hardest work?

Boss Hogg was the law. He fought crime. Uncle Jesse and Bo and Luke were criminals. According to your worldview, fighting crime is an end to itself, so you shouldn't suggest that people are saying fighting crime is wrong unless you take into account the possibilities where fighting crime is a pretense for other things.
