Wait, Whiskey said that Robinson was aiming for the Orem Temple. That accuracy leaves a lot to be desired.Hound of Heaven wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 3:49 pmNo need to go to X to find an intemperate fool, I found one here. I am sorry that this has hit you so hard. If you are in a state of mind in which saying someone deserved to be killed seems no different from saying that the murder was skillfully carried out, perhaps you are not at your best, which is understandable in the circumstances. This new X post you have dredged up also does not say that Charlie Kirk deserved to be killed. Were you aware of that?Hound of Heaven wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 3:49 pmNo need to go to X to find an intemperate fool, I found one here. And he admires the accuracy of an assassin's aim. May I just say that I have (a long time ago) been trained to fire a rifle not completely dissimilar to the one used by the person who murdered Kirk, and I am amazed that he managed to hit Kirk at the range from which he was firing. It was an amazing piece of bad luck for Kirk that he was hit.

Indeed. Initial reports were that the individual who shot Kirk was either very lucky or had military training:Chap wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 4:05 pmMay I just say that I have (a long time ago) been trained to fire a rifle not completely dissimilar to the one used by the person who murdered Kirk, and I am amazed that he managed to hit Kirk at the range from which he was firing. Oh Chap. If you think that a 150 yard shot is not as basic and simple as it gets, you were not actually trained to fire a rifle even remotely similar. While I respect the honesty and perhaps the vulnerability, the facts are the facts. Accuracy is expected at that range with such a rifle.Chap wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 4:05 pmMay I just say that I have (a long time ago) been trained to fire a rifle not completely dissimilar to the one used by the person who murdered Kirk, and I am amazed that he managed to hit Kirk at the range from which he was firing. Insane. Absolutely insane. There are explanations for the trajectory and conditions, but hell no. Hell no. No no no no no. 150 yards? The murderer was a kid raised to hunt deer with a rifle. I don’t know that this really challenged his skills. People are used to seeing the unskilled nut who buys a lot of guns and imagines they give him super powers to kill. Those folks fire a lot more than they hit. In that context, this shooter stands out, but he is not extraordinary.

I was thinking not so much of the fact that he hit Kirk at all, but the fact that he managed what was in effect a head shot. Also, I was assuming that he was simply firing with normal sights (nothing telescopic) while holding the rifle in position by hand. And by all accounts the rifle in question was something of an antique. The rifle I fired was a short Lee-Enfield, vintage c. 1917 If I recall correctly. There is a discussion of the maximum accuracy of related rifles here, and the question of the advantages of telescopic sights and stands is noted:Whiskey wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 4:39 pmOh Chap. But from a later post, I see that this person was an experienced shooter, which I was not expecting him to be:
I certainly was not!Kishkumen wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 5:37 pmThe murderer was a kid raised to hunt deer with a rifle. I don’t know that this really challenged his skills. Anyhow, the main point of my post was to test Whiskey's tolerance for the use of "amazing", not to discuss technical gun stuff. So far, I seem to have got away unscathed on that score. Amazing!
