One of the most effective deprogramming and re-education strategies out there is that used by the US Marine Corps. The reputation of Marine Corps Boot Camp as a place where one is broken down and rebuilt in the image of the Corps is well deserved. Vietnam era draftees who had the mistaken belief that bad behavior would be a ticket back to civilian life from boot camp were assigned to a special unit. The unit had nothing to do but break up concrete with sledge hammers. If the unfortunate recruit's bad conduct warranted it, there might even be an intermediate stop off in the base brig on the way to the concrete pile.

New concrete recruits were informed that their enlistment was for two years and there was plenty of concrete to be broken for the duration. On the upside, they were advised that they would eventually have the opportunity to join another regular training unit and start the whole process over again (the first week was the worst).

However, return to regular duty could only happen once they demonstrated sufficient commitment to the Corps and its principles. This was to be achieved through obedience to lawful orders, setting an example of commitment and leadership to the newer arrivals, and exhibiting an understanding of the importance of breaking concrete to the mission of the Corps. Most importantly, they must demonstrate understanding of and adherence to, the oath the took when they were sworn in.

The one individual who left our unit never returned, but we did pick up a concrete class graduate from an earlier training unit. As I recall, he did well. Most recruits who earned to this special assignment returned to another training unit and completed basic training. For those who the Corps deemed it would be better off without, there were (eventually) administrative discharges, including entry level separations for those physically unable to complete training.

If the Trumpster insurrectionist nut jobs in their tacticool gear with their runic patches and confederate flags want to be considered as an army of patriots, or paramilitary freedom fighters - great. When they are arrested and awaiting trial, there should be plenty of opportunity for best available basic training at a certain Marine Corps base construction site near San Diego, or the MCRD Parris Island swamp. A select set eager USMC Drill Instructors would be standing by to serve at either location. Special emphasis during retraining could be placed on proper understanding of, and adherence to, the Constitution.

Better yet, I hear there is room opening up at Guantanamo Bay. Guards there are specially trained in handling inmates who fancy themselves as freedom fighters. I hear that trial dates there are hard to come by.

I'm with you on this one DrW. I'm not totally sure it's a one size fits all though. Take for example breeds of dogs. If one were to shake a whipping stick at certain breeds of dog, one episode could induce a lifetime anxiety disorder in the creature. Other breeds though, blue heeler types for example, require a daily head cracking just to get their attention. Anybody who squawks at this assumed mistreatment of animals has never owned a working cattle dog.

But, since the justice dept. isn't too keen on applying punishments to people based upon their psych evaluation... I'm pretty sure this analogy isn't very useful in helping solve any of the current problems.
