You haven’t lost your mind. Exposure to people who have is disorienting. Confirmation bias is real and it is powerful. And once you get people who effectively dismiss any evidence that causes them discomfort as “fake news,” what you are seeing is what happens.

This is someone I KNOW. And I'm over here like I can't BELIEVE what I just read! There is VIDEO and STILL SHOTS of this stuff. There are reports all over the whole Internet from folks of all stripes. How in the HELL do you shut off this stuff like it's not even there???

I have to wonder what their explanation would be for the many GOP members who came out against this illegal activity? What? They are sell outs? Colin Powell is a sell out? George Bush is a sell out? What a sick and twisted little world they live in like the world isn't sick and twisted enough right now. But to deny the FACTS and REALITY of the EVIDENCE?

It's ALL RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE!

Let's take a Jersey psych break because I just saw something that made me nuts. So there I was watching videos of (you're not going to believe this) an LDS group called Gentri (I'm not joking) while cutting up paper (don't ask) and crying my little baby eyes out for no good reason at all except, I dunno, the world has gone mad and I'm waiting it out like everyone else and their dog and so then I decided to suck it up and shift gears and give a look on Facebook whereupon I read this comment by someone I've known for I dunno 15 years or more (more), who is not exactly my age but close and she posts a Facebook rant about how the security at the Capitol as NOT lax and that the protesters went through the building between the velvet ropes just like tourists and basically the crowd was peaceful and I dunno all what other BS.

And then I came right here because now I feel like the world really has gone right into the ditches or maybe it's just me.

Is there something fundamentally wrong with people? Can't the see the photos? The videos? Haven't they heard the reports by folks from all sides? HOW can you live in this world for the past, I dunno what day it is, 4 days or whatever with all of this evidence in YOUR FACE from like I said...ALL SIDES...and still take on a position like that in full public view?

I think I have lost my mind.

The best thing to do is "Unfollow" them. At least then their posts will not show up in your NewsFeed to always remind you of what they have become. I usually simply "Unfollow" friends whose posts and comments sadden or piss me off because they have become so damned stupid politically or otherwise that it disturbs me because I remember when they weren't so blindly idiotically stupid. But if a friend ever posts screwed up crap to my Profile or comments screwed up crap on a post of mine then I Block them. So Unfollow them first So you don't see their crap in your NewsFeed and then Block them if needed. They aren't worthy of your attention which only saps your own energy. You don't owe them any of your energy.

It’s hard to see this happen in people we know. What you are seeing is what brains do. They take in a firehouse of stimulus and turn it into a story. And once it figures out a story, it sticks with it. I don’t think we could survive if the story our brains tell us changed with every new piece of information. So, you know how this goes. The brain emphasizes information that reinforces the story and minimizes or finds ways to reject information that contradicts the story. And it seem to me that the brain is particularly stubborn about the parts of the story that are an important part of the identity our brains construct.

Here’s my guess. The riot represents a severe threat to the core of her story. The result is cognitive dissonance. He or she is probably posting this stuff to try and reduce the CD. Her brain is struggling in its efforts to maintain the story. And that manifests as lashing out or furious posting. The only way to reduce the discomfort, which is probably intolerable, is to find a way to reject the evidence or change a part of a story that is part of core identity.

It’s just like what former Mormons describe as shelf breaking, and it can be traumatic as hell. And because the rational part of our brains is relatively new and very fragile, the reasoning skills that you can apply may simply be overwhelmed and unavailable.

I’ve been in something like that state, and it was hell for me. I wish I knew what to say to a person in that state that would be helpful. All I can suggest is that you disconnect from him or her, at least for a bit, as it sounds like this is causing you significant distress.

Shoot I came back to delete some of my outbursts. Too late! Anyway, they aren't one of my Facebook friends. They're the Facebook friend of a Facebook friend. Long story.

I have so many notifications blocked already, it's crazy. Because like you, I can't look at repeated nonsense even by relatives. I think I need to unfollow the friend which is perfectly fine. I have to say, I put exactly nothing political or otherwise controversial on Facebook. I don't want my Facebook to become a place where people argue with each other so I try to make it fun. I have one friend whose Facebook is almost entirely political but that is someone who welcomes debate.

It's just so weird that politics and specifically Trump has brought out the crazy in so many people. As much as I complain here on the board or sometimes rant, I would never do that on Facebook. This place is my only online outlet for that kind of thing and for the most part, I am here to learn about politics and applicable law,because before all of this started I didn't know crap about the topic and sometimes I still think that I don't. But I try...plus, there's tons involved in these topics that relate to human behavior which is a passion of mine.

I think you make good sense here. When I am trying to respond to posts about religious belief, I know good and well that I sometimes experience cog dis but the thing is that I am fully aware of it. There was a post I started to make in Terrestrial and I admitted in another post that I had started the reply and that it didn't make any sense. I think my meta cognition is intact. That and the fact that I'm constantly observing myself. You guys might think all I do is observe others but that is not the case. I'm constantly thinking about my own thinking and how I work things out in my own head. That's one of the benefits of boards like these, particularly the first board I was on. Interacting with those people and also the self reflection piece of own profession, created a great deal of self awareness in me. I'm NOT saying I'm 100% self aware, but I think I score pretty high in that regard.

Or I'm just obsessive.

I mentioned previously that the night of the assault on the Capitol, JB got online and changed his voter registration affiliation. I wouldn't say that he "snapped". I would say that he snapped back. I haven't seen him this settled in such a long time. He's told me bits and pieces of the "why". It sounds a lot like what, say, Colin Powell is saying. So I don't know how this friend of a friend could possibly not somehow see the light unless they are still binge watching places like FOX News. I guess some folks are processing and others are avoiding it.

It didn't really cause me all that much distress. I posted here in the moment. But I am going to unfollow the friend whose Facebook it was posted on so I don't get blindsided again.

It's fascinating for sure. I was just so shocked that an older adult would pop off like that in full public view on someone else's Facebook but they are related to that person so I guess she just decided to go for it. You do NOT see me lose it on Facebook.
