First, look at the photo below and you'll find an important sketch MARK indicator drawn by the person wielding the pencil who alone is responsible for sketching the so-called priest's head and bony Abraham on the altar. What MARK do I refer to? A MARK that indicates that a single person was responsible for the doodling pencil sketches and was determined to fill in the lacunae.

1. It is a hash mark.
2. A mark of authority set by the penman
3. A mark to go back and fill in the blank
4. A mark indicating that he didn't know how to proceed

That's not the special "hash mark" I had in mind, but it's a curious anomaly that I commented on earlier in this thread:

Lem, that oval-shaped thing has ever been an anomaly and I've never been able to determine exactly what it is. You'll note that the graphite used to make that shape is more purely rubbed into the fibers of the paper as if it was able to make better contact. Is that because there is a lack of glue sheened over that portion of paper prior to setting the papyrus fragment? I've contemplated that. My best guess at this point is that it's simply a test patch for the graphite instrument to perhaps sharpen the point and *p r e p* it for sketching -- but that's speculation on my part.

PS. Thanks for the drawing in circling the patch in red. I can use that for future use!

Nope. It's another special mark to remind the person who made it to go back and resolve the problem later. Keep looking, it's right there in front of you!

That little hash mark says a lot. The artist put it there for a reason, obviously -- to remind himself to go back and figure out what to do with the missing HAND. But, the artist never went back. All we get from the sketches is the priest's head and bony Abraham. We don't get the hand until publication of the Times and Seasons, compliments of Reuben Hedlock's printing plate.

Obviously, the knife in the other hand was selected to represent the sacrificial instrument of destruction and the other hand was just a hand. But that was changed later on for reasons I speculate in this thread:

You know. Taking another hard look at JSP1, I think I see the faint outline of Anubis’ head, his right arm up, probably holding some object, and the left hand extended:



Look hard where I highlighted the areas with an outline. I swear there’s an impression or bleed-through pre-tearing away of the pieces from the papyrus.

You’ll have to magnify or blow up the image to see the ‘ghost’ impressions I’m noticing, but I think there’s something there:

Those do look like straight cuts. I've ever entertained the idea that Smith removed the jackal head. You can see traces of Anubis's headdress in the black ink inside the red box below. NonMormon Egyptologists are 100% sure that this is Anubis and he had a jackal head. I'm 100% sure too. Was the jackal head torn from the papyrus? Difficult to say. Was the jackal nose scraped off Hedlock's Facsimile No. 3 printing plate? Absolutely, it was!

If FIRST came the glue and SECOND came the Pencil:

1. Original papyrus fragments were brought to the table
2. Glue was applied to a large sheet of of paper backing
3. Papyrus was glued to the paper backing
4. The glued dried
5. POSSIBILITY THAT PIECES OF PAPYRUS WERE REMOVED TO FORM MORE LACUNEA
5. The paper backing and papyrus were cut into pieces being readied for frames
6. POSSIBILITY THAT PIECES OF PAPYRUS WERE REMOVED TO FORM MORE LACUNAE
7. Sketches of the priest's head, knife in right hand, and bony Abraham were complete
8. The fragments were set in frames under Joseph Smith's management
9. The doodles of the priest's head and bony Abraham remained safely behind glass
10. It was determined later that the knife would be placed in the left hand
