The events I described happened in Utah County about 12 years ago. I'm in Texas now. But yeah, that was a bizarre ward to say the least: uruguayan garment-wearing terrorists, a scout killed in a hiking accident, a brigade of Bo Gritz supporting Birchers. And of course, those were just the "permanent" folks. Most ward members were married students.

When I hear about people freaking out about Word of Wisdom breachs, or all the gossip in the Relief Society, I always remember Joseph Smith talking about how God is far more liberal, and far more conservative than anyone gives him credit for.

Not everyone is at the same level of repentance, and not everyone has read the same books on doctrine everyone else has.

Theres a saying in my Elders quarum, " Your actions speak so loud I can't hear what your saying"

That boy had years more to decide if he wanted to serve a mission or not. Maybe if people had left him alone he might have changed his mind. His parents that kicked him out will have a rude awakening come judgement day.

I don't know what to make of it. I had a lot of good years in that ward: elders quorum president, YM president, executive secretary. Saw a lot of craziness, mind you, and had death threats once. Good times. But yeah, I feel bad for both of those kids. They didn't deserve what they got from that ward.
