Because I'm bitter and cold and I enjoy belittling those who believe in faith as a valid method of running their life, I give you these chunks of fact. Not due to anything cruel but because I really enjoy being able to state these things. Just knowing that you will read them is good enough for me. The fact I fluster you so much that you can not come up with a coherent response is all the better.
Does anyone else see the irony of accusing another mindset of bringing about the Dark Ages and in the next paragraph sounding amoral and savagely vindictive?

I find belief in the second coming of Christ to be generally limited to Southern fundamentalist and evangelical churches. I do not see references to or hear people speak much about the second coming outside the South
Is he saying that the Catholics, Lutherans, Northern Baptists...etc., don't believe in the Second Coming? 'Cause that sure looks like what he's saying. If so, he's sure wrong.

Hi Jersey Girl, sorry to be late... I 'think' Spong is pointing to THE core of Fundamentalism as reped by the late Jerry F??? I'm sure he knows the phenomena is NA wide... IF he doesn't, you and i do :-) LDS believe that as much, or even more, than the other fundy sects... I "bear-testimony" to that!! And LDSism is world-wide--unfortunately... Warm regards, Roger
Spong’s View Of God Spong rejects the Christian view of God as the Creator of the universe, RM: Your "God" possibly, as do MANNNNNY folks... which is distinct from Him and utterly dependent on Him for its existence. RM: I wonder IF you really know "God"??? Instead, he plays a game of word magic:
We have come to the dawning realisation that God might not be separate from us but rather deep within us. (RBF p. 33)
RM: The above doesn't sound like your words??? So be it... I refer you to Luke 17: 21. (But read 20 to 23 as well...)
Roger your study of this fools RM: Warning: Read Matt 5: 22, you cold be in grave danger...IF you believe the Bible... writings has seriously screwed with your head. This man is a heretic in the worst sence of the word. I highly advise you to throw away his trash and get back to studying the words of the Prophets and Apostles. RM: And reading those as You do has done what for YOU???
Thanks for your concern, and advice. Your intentions are well received. But you invite me to where i have already been. That experience served its purpose... Some day you might understand the process... As always Bro, warm regards, Roger

I'll remember next time to punctuate my sarcasm. In reading it I think the sentence structure is lacking in pointing out the sarcasm.

Try this. Northern Baptists are American Baptists. Southern Baptists are not American Baptists. I used the term "Northern Baptist" (which is an old term) to make a distinction between the American Baptists and Southern Baptists that Spong appears to be referring to in the hopes of not confusing the reader. Catholics, Lutherans, and Baptist denominations ALL call their congregations to repentance via Biblical scriptures and have the Second Coming as a core doctrine.
That is why I question Spong's statement.
The problem with folks who were raised up in Mormonism, so far as I can tell, is that they base their view of what constitutes "Baptist" on extreme fundamentalists and mainly Southern Baptists and haven't been taught or made aware that there exist all sorts of Baptists sects and alliances throughout the US and the world and that they aren't all interested in waving garments around or playing frisbee with the LDS Quad in Temple Square.
In my view, Spong's claim is inaccurate at best and intended to mislead.

Ahh, see? You CAN respond to a post without utilizing personal attacks and demands for minutia.

This is another one of those statements that may be very much misunderstood. For all those procrastinating their day of repentance, what is the likelyhood that you will die before any second coming and be paid a visit by Him at that time.
I see the "second coming" as a non event except for a few westerners that may have a TV.
If He does come down bathed in blood laying waste to muslims and fighting for Jews that don't even know who He is, my prediction is that I won't be touring the middle east that season. I would just as well stay at home that day. I'd prefer to schedule an appointment with Him on one of his less bad hair days.
I don't have much time to post now days, but I just wanted to say that I appreciate your postings. I'd never heard of Spong before, but a lot of what he says really resonates with me. It's good stuff. by the way, have you read "the Sacred Depths of Nature" by Ursula Goodenough? If not, I think you'd like it.
I like the idea of living for the present and all. However, it seems to me the New Testament proclaims a literal second coming. Acts says he will come back the same way he ascended. Spong seems to not take much of scripture for what it says.

Gaz, seems to me that what Roger's studies have done for him is give him the kind of peacefulness to give you this kind and thoughtful answer to your frenzied and fearful post. I'll have what Roger's having.
