What was up with that? I'm not in Utah so maybe I'm not "in the know" or what Straight Edge is.

You don't know what "Straight Edge" is? Yeesh! Young people today...so uneducated! The wikipedia entry will help
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_edge, but what you really need to do is listen to some Ian MacKaye and Minor Threat.
From the Ernest L. Wilkinson Diaries: "ELW dreams he's spattered w/ grease. Hundreds steal his greasy pants."

Here is a wikipedia link. When I was at BYU I had a friend who was straight edge...he had the tattoo and all. He was also an active Mormon. They basically make an oath not to take drugs, drink alcohol, etc. It's tied to the hardcore/punk music scene from the early 90's. In last night's episode it said they had to be vegan, but that's not true (though a lot of them are). It can be violent at some of the rallies, hence Ben's beat-up face. I think there's a pretty active straight edge scene in Salt Lake.
Edited to add: It's members claim it is a philosophical movement, not tied to religion, though some straight edgers are still religious.

Or Fugazi!
Psst... My first born son is named Ian. *eyes a flutter*
I know what straight edge is. Lived in the D.C. area during my early teen years in the late 80's.
I arrived late to the party. I spent the 80's listening to my parents' music. While you and monkeys were listening to Minor Threat, I was probably listening to Billy Ocean. ;) I missed the good punk. I did get a decent dose of indie rock throughout the 90's (Matador, Merge, Touch and Go, Jade Tree, etc.). So Blixa, do I take the above quote to mean that you are/were straight edge?
