Well, one has to believe in God as a precondition of thinking she is going about picking people for anything. Then, another precondition is that she actually cares about this kind of stuff. Oh, and another is that she is particularly concerned with the cause of Mormonism.

I don't have answers to any of these issues.

According to Quinn's Extensions of Power (p. 736), here is Quentin Cook's relations to other GA's:

1st cousin, twice removed, to SPENCER W. KIMBALL;

3rd cousin to BRUCE PORTER of the 1st Quorum of the Seventy;

Great-grandnephew of J. GOLDEN KIMBALL;

2nd great-grandnephew of HEBER KIMBALL.

Here is part of Henry Eyring's relations to other GA's:

nephew of SPENCER W. KIMBALL (Henry's chemist dad was brother of SWK's wife, Camilla);

1st cousin, once removed, to MARION ROMNEY.

In other words, Mormon Royalty. And why is anyone surprised that Cook was the choice?

Yikes....these families are really inter-connected. In the south we call that inbreeding, out west I guess it's grounds for greatness. *shrugs*

Not much greatness going around on the Wasatch. Some pretenders, yes, but true greatness requires a bit more than just standing at a pulpit and reading from a monitor.

Well greatness is relative I guess. When the whole group thinks jumping up on the stage and dancing while the organ grinder plays is greatness, then I guess it is for them.

It's kind of strange that he acted as though this came out of left field. His chances were better than most. But then there is that whole expression of humility and surprise ritual.

Oh yeah, the ol' "Wow! The Lord chose me! I am so honored! So humbled! So amazed that I am deemed special enough to be accepted into this august group."... "oh, and do I pay tithing on money I stole from the good citizens of California?"
