Some other tidbit's from Julie Beck's talk (all bold mine for emphasis, and my comments are in CAPS):

1. Quotes ETB that "young couples should not postpone having children, and that in the eternal perspective, children -- not possessions, not position, not prestige -- are our greatest jewels." In other words, MAKE BABIES WITHOUT DISREGARD FOR ANYTHING ELSE.

2. Praises mothers who "honor sacred ordinances and covenants." As an example, Beck recounts, "I have visited sacrament meetings in some of the poorest places on earth, where mothers have dressed with great care in their Sunday best, despite walking for miles on dusty roads and using worn out public transportation. They bring daughters in clean and ironed dresses. Their sons wear white shirts and ties and have missionary haircuts." In other words, BE MORE WORRIED ABOUT OUTWARD APPEARANCE THAN INWARD FAITH.

3. "Another word for nurturing is homemaking. Homemaking includes cooking, washing clothes and dishes, and keeping an orderly home. Home is where women have the most power and influence. Therefore, Latter-day Saint women should be the best homemakers in the world." IWO, STAY AT HOME AND ONLY WORK THERE. OH, AND DON'T FORGET TO WEAR PEARLS AND HIGH HEELS WHILE MAKING DINNER.

4. "Nurturing mothers are knowledgeable, but all the education women attain will avail them nothing if they do not have the skill to make up homes that create a climate for spiritual growth." In other words, EDUCATION IS NOT THAT IMPORTANT FOR WOMEN.

5. "Growth happens best in a house of order, and women should pattern their homes after the Lord's house." In other words, YOUR HOUSE SHOULD BE AS CLEAN AND UNCLUTTERED AS THE STALE TEMPLE.

6. "These wise mothers who know are selective about their own activities and involvement to conserve their limited strength in order to maximize their influence where it matters most." In other words, DON'T DO ANYTHING IN THE COMMUNITY -- LIMIT YOUR ENERGIES TO CHURCH CALLINGS AND HOMEMAKING CLASS.

7. "Mothers who know do less. They persmit less of what will not bear good fruit eternally. They allow less media in their homes, less distraction, less activity that draws their children away from their home." In other words, REINFORCEMENT THAT LDS WOMEN SHOULD COCOON THEMSELVES AND THEIR KIDS IN THE HOME AND AWAY FROM THE EVIL WORLD OUTSIDE.
"Moving beyond apologist persuasion, LDS polemicists furiously (and often fraudulently) attack any non-traditional view of Mormonism. They don't mince words -- they mince the truth."

-- Mike Quinn, writing of the FARMSboys, in "Early Mormonism and the Magic World View," p. x (Rev. ed. 1998)

One wonders what the brethren are thinking. Are they merely trying to get a hold on lifestyle because it correlates with tithes? Are they going to push large families again because the missionary effort is failing?

One thing is for sure, if the church was growing wildly or if it sold a product anyone wanted or needed, it wouldn't need to push cookie-cutter lifestyles.

I think the church may have a broken business model. The church has primarily relied on tithing revenues to fund its' growth. However, most of its' growth has come from converts living in third world countries. These converts tend to go inactive quickly and don't significantly contribute to tithing coffers. In other words, the church is spending alot to get and support a high number of non paying customers. This is a recipe for disaster.

It seems to me that the church is focusing on literally creating (via birth) it's next wave of potential tithe paying customers. Thus the emphasis on getting married, raising kids, etc. In the meantime expect to see a large emphasis on growing its' non religious business interests.

In addition, I don't think the church will be able to repackage or reposition its' product with much success. It would have to be successfully repositioned to those with money (the West, Japan). These people are more educated and won't be buying. Accordingly, the church will try to increase its' core base through higher birthrates.

Since the family advice is not new it's not as if some failure in the Mission Program is catapulting a new 'Breed to Succeed' program.

The minions of hell have carefully studied the Church's financial situation. It is unfortunately in good shape. The average member donates more monetarily then they receive and Missionaries are generally funded outside Tithing.

We have mostly given up on bankrupting the Church. Other methods must be used. We want suicide bombers but haven't been able to recruit enough yet.

Some background on Sis. Beck:

She's 53 and the daughter of William Bangerter (GA since 1975) and the niece of Norm Bangerter (former Utah gov). She married when she was 19, and her husband is a local banker in Alpine, UT. They have 3 children, and several grandchildren.

Don't worry, she and her husband will have countless numbers in the next life ... as will each of her sister wives. ;)

Personally I'm hoping to roast her in on a grid and taunt her with the general untidiness of Hell.

I call for a restoration of all things in the relief society including speaking in tongues as another sister interprets the language.

I find that too many women already speak in tongues already that no man (mortal or immortal) can understand.
